Tenuta di Coltibuono s.ag.r.l. Unip. Loc. Badia a Coltibuono, Gaiole in Chianti 53013 (SI)
A label that very well represents the excellence of the wine production of Badia a Coltibuono, a company with a long history that has made respect for nature and the appreciation of the land its cornerstones. The production area is located between Gaiole in Chianti and Monti in Chianti, two municipalities that stand on medium-textured calcareous clay hills, an ideal terrain for the cultivation of Sangiovese, an indigenous variety that dominates the production of this wine. Small percentages of other traditional vines, such as Canaiolo and Colorino, are added to the Sangiovese. This choice gives the finished wine greater aromatic complexity and a more structured body. Harvested by hand, the best bunches are selected in the vineyard to preserve the freshness of the grapes. In the cellar, the grapes undergo a natural fermentation with indigenous yeasts, a process that brings out the best characteristics of the fruit. Maceration on the skins lasts at least three weeks, during which time the wine acquires colour, structure and tannins. This is followed by 24 months of ageing in oak barrels, which gives the wine complexity, elegance and harmony. A further 4 months of bottle ageing allows the wine to stabilise and reach its full expression. Intense ruby red colour with garnet reflections. On the nose, the wine reveals an elegant and complex bouquet, with balsamic notes, hints of flower petals, cherries in alcohol, liquorice and chocolate. In the mouth, it is warm and enveloping, with a perfect harmony between freshness and structure. The well-integrated tannins give the wine a pleasant astringency that enhances its persistence.
Today we find ourselves in the heart of Chianti Classico, where Badia a Coltibuono stands, an oasis of history and tradition that has been dedicated to the production of typical wines for over a thousand years. A place where time seems to stand still and where the passion for winemaking is handed down from generation to generation. The history of Badia a Coltibuono began as far back as 1051, when some Vallombrosian monks founded an abbey in this evocative place. Already at that time, they began to cultivate vines, giving rise to a tradition that would remain indissolubly linked to the history of this place. Over the centuries, the abbey became an important religious and economic centre, attracting pilgrims and visitors from all over Europe. In 1846, Badia a Coltibuono passed to the Giuntini family, whose descendants still run the estate today. Under their leadership, the abbey has been transformed into a modern farm, while preserving its historical charm. A fundamental role in this renewal process was played by Piero Stucchi Prinetti, who gave a decisive imprint to the company, steering it towards the production of high quality wines capable of conquering national and international markets.
