Conte Guicciardini, Via Fezzana 45 /49 – Montespertoli (FI)
A pretty red with notes of blackberry, licorice, cured meat and spice box. Full-bodied with firm tannins. Structured and racy in the mouth with a velvety texture and plenty of black fruit to the finish. Drink in 2024.
Aromas of mocha, cedar and tilled soil form the subtle nose. The mature, ready palate offers baked plum, espresso and star anise alongside dusty tannins. Drink through 2023. KERIN O’KEEFE
Fattoria Belvedere Campòli is located in one of the most prestigious areas of Chianti Classico, right on the ridge of the hills between Mercatale and Montefiridolfi. We are about 400 metres above sea level. Here, since 2015, the Guicciardini family has been producing its Chianti Classico DOCG, on the strength of excellent exposures and generous soils. The main grape variety, needless to say, is the most Tuscan of reds, Sangiovese, which is vinified in steel and cement vats. At the end of the transformation, the wine then matures for about a year in tonneaux. Ruby red in colour, the nose shows typical hints of red fruits and delicate notes of aromatic herbs. In the mouth, however, it is fresh, with a nice juicy and intense fruitiness. A wine with a good structure, the tannins are elegant and well balanced, while the finish is long and complex. Useless to look for a different pairing. This 'toscanaccio' should always be served with tasty meat dishes. Reds, in particular, barbecued.
The Guicciardini, one of the oldest Florentine families, had a prominent position in the political, social and economic life of Florence since 1200. Their history is inextricably linked to that of the Castello di Poppiano, a medieval building erected around the year 1000 as a fortress to defend Florence from the outside. An act of inheritance from 1199 confirms that it has belonged to the Guicciardini family for at least nine centuries. Today, the castle is one of the most important realities of the 'Chianti Colli Fiorentini' DOCG. The good soils, locally called 'alberese', clayey but rich in skeleton and well drained, are the precondition for obtaining fine wines. The vinification cellar is adjacent to the castle, while the maturation cellar, in oak barrels and barriques, is located in the basement, where the optimum temperature is maintained naturally. Since 2015, Castello di Poppiano has also been joined by another estate, Belvedere-Campòli, in Chianti Classico. Then there is Massi di Mandorlaia, located in Maremma, in this case within the MoreIlino di Scansano appellation.
