Conte Guicciardini, Via Fezzana 45 /49 – Montespertoli (FI)
The Conte Guicciardini Chianti Colli Fiorentini Castello di Poppiano Il Cortile (a blend of 85% Sangiovese, with smaller parts Ciliegiolo and Colorino) offers ripe aromas of dark fruit, prune and dried blackberry. With an ample production of 100,000 bottles, the fruit is sourced from a vineyard with well-draining alberese soils and rocks. This wine shows a sweet spot and offers a general presentation of fruit aromas that lack in specifics but deliver in terms of power and texture. I'd go with spicy Italian sausages grilled with onions and green peppers for this wine.
Aromas of strawberries, raspberries and sweet tobacco. It’s medium-bodied with plush tannins and crisp acidity. Fruity and spiced. Juicy finish. Drink or hold.
Aromas recalling new leather, cassis and eucalyptus form the nose along with a whiff of violet. Made with 85% Sangiovese and 15% between Ciliegiolo and Colorino, this has a medium-bodied palate offering dried cherry, mocha and a hint of licorice alongside pliant tannins. It closes on a slightly bitter note of coffee bean and grilled sage. KERIN O’KEEFE
When it comes to Chianti, and in particular that called Colli Fiorentini DOCG, Conti Guicciardini is simply an absolute reference point. In this case, in particular, we are dealing with the most representative label of the Castello di Poppiano tradition. It is, in fact, a special selection, from the best vintages, matured in oak barrels. Sangiovese for about 85% and Merlot and Cabernet for the remainder, this red is fermented in conditioned vats with a maceration period of no less than 18 days. For the delicate maturation phase, oak barrels are used, where the wine rests for about two years. Then, after bottling, it is left to refine in glass for at least another 3 months before its official market debut. Intense ruby red colour with garnet hues, the nose reveals an evolved and complex bouquet. In the mouth, it is characterised by a beautiful structure and natural elegance. The tannins are velvety and well harmonised with the alcohol component. A full-blooded Tuscan red, it guarantees a long, pleasant and balanced finish.
The Guicciardini, one of the oldest Florentine families, had a prominent position in the political, social and economic life of Florence since 1200. Their history is inextricably linked to that of the Castello di Poppiano, a medieval building erected around the year 1000 as a fortress to defend Florence from the outside. An act of inheritance from 1199 confirms that it has belonged to the Guicciardini family for at least nine centuries. Today, the castle is one of the most important realities of the 'Chianti Colli Fiorentini' DOCG. The good soils, locally called 'alberese', clayey but rich in skeleton and well drained, are the precondition for obtaining fine wines. The vinification cellar is adjacent to the castle, while the maturation cellar, in oak barrels and barriques, is located in the basement, where the optimum temperature is maintained naturally. Since 2015, Castello di Poppiano has also been joined by another estate, Belvedere-Campòli, in Chianti Classico. Then there is Massi di Mandorlaia, located in Maremma, in this case within the MoreIlino di Scansano appellation.
