Tenute Stefano Farina Soc. Agric. Srl, Via Case Sparse, 77, 50022 Greve in Chianti, Fraz. Panzano in Chianti (FI)
This Chianti Classico DOCG Riserva represents the pinnacle of quality from Tenute Stefano Farina. A fine expression of Sangiovese and the Chianti Classico region. This wine is made from a careful selection of the best grapes and is aged for a long period in wood, acquiring complexity and finesse. We are in Panzano in Chianti, a hamlet of the municipality of Greve in Chianti, in the heart of the Chianti Classico production area. Here the hilly landscape is of rare beauty, with vineyards, olive groves and woods alternating in harmonious balance. The soil is mainly calcareous and poor, consisting of marl and silt, very permeable, ideal for the cultivation of vines. This Riserva is produced exclusively with Sangiovese, the main grape variety of Chianti Classico, which in this version expresses its full potential. The grapes are harvested by hand and placed in 20 kg boxes in the second half of September, when they have reached perfect ripeness. Vinification in temperature-controlled cement tanks, with prolonged maceration to extract the best colour and aromas from the skins. Finally, the wine ages in large oak barrels and second and third passage barriques for at least 24 months, acquiring complexity and finesse. This is followed by a further refinement in the bottle for at least 6 months before being released on the market. Intense ruby colour tending to garnet with ageing. The nose perceives intense and complex aromas of morello cherry, wild berries, spices and leather. In the mouth it is balanced and harmonious, with elegant tannins and a long persistence. This is a wine that can also be enjoyed ‘on its own’, at the table it goes well with flavoursome dishes such as Florentine steak, game and mature cheeses.
The history of Tenute Stefano Farina has its roots in the 1930s, when Stefano Farina and his wife Giovanna ran a trattoria where, in addition to serving food, they also served wine. It was in this context that Stefano developed a growing interest in oenology, deciding in 1939 to start his own winery, despite the difficulties linked to the war period. In 1941, the family moved to Erba, in Lombardy, and here Stefano passed on his passion for wine to his children, in particular to Giancarlo. After studying oenology in Alba, Giancarlo understood the importance of producing quality wine directly from one's own vineyards. Today, the Stefano Farina Estates boast five properties located in some of Italy's most renowned wine regions: Piedmont, Tuscany and Puglia. The first acquisition dates back to the mid-seventies with ‘La Traversa’ in La Morra, in the heart of the Langhe region of Piedmont. Subsequently, the company expanded into the Chianti Classico region, the Alba area, the Casentino area and finally the Salento region in Puglia, a land particularly dear to the family due to the historical ties with the founder's wine business. The company's philosophy aims to enhance the value of native vines through modern winemaking practices, to obtain wines that reflect the essence of their territory.
