Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Località Molinello, 53024 Montalcino SI - Italia
Dark depths of crushed plums and black cherries are offset by note of rosemary, spiced citrus peels and hints of cocoa as the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso opens in the glass. This is an especially racy style for Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona, with cooling mineral tones and zesty acidity propelling its ripe berry fruit and hints of sour citrus across the palate. While structured, this finishes with tremendous enerdy and freshness, leaving the mouth watering with a lingering bitter hint of balsamic spice. The 2018 may not possess the power often associated with the Pianrosso, but it instead impresses with its lively and spicy caracter.
A special singlevineyard wine with origins in one of the more remote, wild and beautiful corners of Montalcino, this is one of the true treats of the appellation. The Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso opens to a mediumrich appearance and vibrant color saturation. Sangiovese can lose its color quickly, but it remains beautifully intact here. Sweet cherry, redcurrant, spice, blue flower, balsam herbb and orange peel are neatly woven togheter to creat this balanced wine. Fruit is sourced from acreoss a 11,7hectare vineyard with schistous galestro soils. Production is 37,000 bottles
This is so complex, with lifting citrus and herb understones to the blue and red berry fruit. Thyme, sage and lavender, with mocha and clove, too. Full-bodied, full of depth and intensity, with firm yet seamless tannnins. Evolves to espresso. Balanced, powerful and very long. Try afeter 225
Deep ruby with bricky rim. Concentrated sourcherry nose with a suggestion of gingerbread. Becomes more complex with aeration. Lush, rispe fruit on the palate with polished tannins and tangy acidity. Great length and very accessible.
A complex, red, with dark, savory notes of licorice, eucalyptus and tobacco aligned with cherry and berry flavors. Succulent, showing light viscosity to the texture, with wild herb and iron elements creeping in on the long finish. Power meets grace. Best from 2026 through 2045. 3,083 cases made, 1,083 cases imported.
Both of Ciaci Piccolomini's 2018s offer a "deliciousness" of taste and a truly umami quuality, however the Pianrosso selection delivers grater Brunello satisfaction. Not quite 12 hectares, this ironrich marly vineyard soaked up just enough warmth to clearly demonstrate its southern origins. It has more shape, form and depth to lend endurance. Iron and salty minerals emerfe from a backdrop of persimmon and hibiscus, finishing with Mediterranean herbs. ocile and yieldinng, the gentile sandy tannins give tectural compexity as well as an immediate drinkability.
The setting is the unique and inimitable hillside of Montalcino. This is the birthplace of Brunello Pianrosso, a small oenological masterpiece signed by Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona. Pianrosso is the name of the cru from which the wine takes its name. It is located at an altitude between 240 and 360 metres above sea level. Here the soils, of medium texture and composed of marl of Eocene origin, give the Sangiovese grapes unique characteristics. The particular geological conformation, rich in minerals, and the warm, sunny climate, with significant temperature swings between day and night, create an ideal environment for the ripening of vigorous, concentrated grapes. 100% Sangiovese Grosso, the vineyards are spurred cordon trained and guarantee a limited production and very high quality grapes. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel and vitrified cement vats. This best preserves the primary characteristics of the grapes and enhances the freshness of the wine. This is followed by ageing in Slavonian oak casks of 20 to 62 hectolitres for about 3 years, to which is added a further resting period in the bottle of over 8 months. In the glass, this Brunello has a beautiful intense ruby red colour with garnet reflections that herald a fascinating evolution. On the nose, intense and complex aromas: ripe red berry fruit, such as cherry, blackberry and plum, spicy notes of black pepper, nutmeg and liquorice. In the mouth it is warm, harmonious and elegant. The tannins, although pronounced, are well integrated and give structure and persistence. The finish is long and persistent, with hints of ripe fruit and spices.
