Pier Paolo Grasso Azienda Vitivinicola - Via Giacosa, 22 - 12050 Treiso (CN)
Make room in the cellar because what we're presenting here is truly excellent. An oenological pearl created by Pier Paolo Grasso. We're talking about the Barbaresco DOCG Riserva ‘Piccola Emma’. But let's proceed in order. Vineyards in Treiso, in the heart of the Langhe, today this municipality is renowned for its vineyards that extend over hills 250 metres above sea level. Here the soil is characterised by limestone formations, with clayey areas, ideal for growing Nebbiolo. A curiosity: in 2010, an asteroid in the main asteroid belt was officially named ‘13494 Treiso’, in honour of this small town rich in history. For Piccola Emma, the Nebbiolo grapes are harvested by hand and undergo a traditional red wine vinification process, after which the wine ages in large 5,000 litre oak barrels. This slow process allows the tannins to soften and an interesting aromatic complexity to develop, without overpowering the intrinsic characteristics of the grape variety. Balance and elegance. In the glass Piccola Emma has a very clear garnet colour. The nose is surprising for its complex bouquet with small wild flowers, lavender and sweet violet that combine with aromatic herbs such as thyme and rosemary. Then juniper berries and black tea. There are also intriguing notes of refinement, with hints of leather, tobacco leaves and a slight hint of cocoa on the finish. In the mouth the wine reveals a youthful freshness and fragrance, with velvety tannins and a harmonious elegance that promises a long evolution. Its ageing potential is remarkable. Even more than 20 years, if well preserved. This Barbaresco Riserva goes well with rich and flavoursome dishes. Great with stewed meats, in particular game, long-aged cheeses, blue cheeses and goat's cheeses. To best appreciate its qualities, we recommend opening the bottle at least an hour before serving and decanting the wine.
