The Barbaresco DOCG Cà Grossa, a Cru (Additional Geographical Indication) of Barbaresco with the same name, already present on maps dating back to the 18th century, is one of the most representative wines of the Pier Paolo Grasso winery. A red wine with great character and strong territoriality, born of the beautiful Piedmont hills. Specifically, it is produced in Treiso, one of the municipalities authorised to produce Barbaresco DOCG. Bordered to the north by the Tanaro river and to the east by the foothills of Monferrato, Barbaresco covers about 1,500 hectares of vineyards, of which 700 are planted with Nebbiolo, the only grape variety permitted for DOCG wine production. The hills of Treiso, with altitudes ranging between 300 and 550 metres above sea level, are characterised by soils rich in calcareous marl and microelements, resulting from the emergence of ancient sea beds during the Tertiary era. These soils give the wine a complex structure and a distinctive minerality. Here the Nebbiolo ripens late and is particularly sensitive to climatic variations, making viticulture a true art. Cà Grossa is the result of controlled fermentation, followed by slow ageing in large 5,000-litre oak barrels. This maturation allows the wine to evolve slowly, integrating the tannins and developing an aromatic complexity without overpowering the fruity and floral notes typical of Nebbiolo. It has a bright garnet red colour. On the nose, however, it reveals a rich and varied bouquet. Initially, floral notes of lavender and wisteria emerge, followed by fruity hints of blackberry, blackcurrant, blood orange and plum. On the finish, delicate nuances of black pepper and chestnut flowers can be perceived. In the mouth, the wine is fresh and soft, with well-smoothed tannins that give it structure without being aggressive. The finish is long and persistent, with pleasant hints of plum and liquorice. Already good today, Cà Grossa has considerable ageing potential. It can be kept for up to 20 years, during which time the wine will continue to evolve, developing further aromatic complexity and refining its elegance. What is certain is that when you finally uncork it, you will discover a perfect red wine to pair with dishes of great structure. Ideal with stewed red meats, such as braised and stewed meats, it is also excellent with goat's cheese and blue cheese. To fully appreciate its qualities, we recommend opening the bottle at least an hour before serving and, if possible, decanting it to favour oxygenation and the full expression of its aromas.
