Aromas of white spring flower, Bartlett pear and citrus waft out of the glass. The racy, refreshing palate is full of energy, offering crisp yellow-apple, lemon drop and orange zest flavors balanced by vibrant acidity. A perlage of small, refined and continuous bubbles provides the silky backdrop. KERIN O’KEEFE

    Prosecco "Rustico" Valdobbiadene DOCG
  • Don't be misled by the name. This Prosecco DOC Treviso is called 'Rustico' but there is nothing crude or unpleasant about it. Quite the contrary. In fact, it is one of the best-loved products of Nino Franco's cellar, one of his pleasant and fresh bubbles. The kind, in other words, that one uncorks with pleasure every time there is a suitable occasion. And if there is no occasion, it doesn't matter... you uncork it anyway! 100% Glera, harvested when perfectly ripe in the company's mid- and high-hill vineyards. We are within the classic production zone, where the vines climb uninterrupted hillsides and the climate is gently cool. The base wines are vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, while the second fermentation takes place in autoclaves according to the Charmat method. Then, after bottling, the wine is left to rest in the cellar for about 30 days. Low dosage, Brut, this Rustico is a very versatile sparkling wine. Brilliant straw yellow. The nose reveals typical aromas of fruit and flowers, including Williams pear and white flowers. In the mouth it is soft and delicate. Excellent as an aperitif, it is perfect with finger food and the classic cicchetti veneti. At the table it is a satisfying accompaniment to light hors d'oeuvres and first courses that are not overly flavoursome. Excellent with the ever-popular baccalà mantecato.

In 2019, Nino Franco celebrated its "first" 100 years. In fact, the date of birth of the historic cellars in Valdobbiadene is 1919. In the beginning it was Nino's father, Antonio, who believed in the importance of making a quality product. And when control of the family business passed to his son, the path was already marked out. The definitive turning point, however, came with the third generation, that of Primo who, first with his father Nino, and then on his own, succeeded in giving the winery the inevitable modern approach. In the early nineties, he took over a vineyard where he experimented with new planting techniques and the use of old clones. In the meantime, he continued his close collaboration with local winegrowers to develop his idea of enhancing the value of Glera. Today, his wife Annalisa and his daughter Silvia support him in this difficult work, supporting her father in all production, strategic and commercial decisions. From generation to generation, from father to son, the milestone of the first century was reached all too soon. And good quality bubbles, we are sure, will continue to be the protagonists of the Franco winery for the next 100 years.
