  • With Le Sentinelle, Fattoria Mantellassi reaches its zenith. It is, in fact, an elegant Morellino di Scansano DOCG Riserva that represents the best qualitative expression of Morellino di Scansano. Le Sentinelle is produced exclusively with grapes from a single vineyard of 2.5 hectares located on the summit of a hillock that gives it its name. The most "miserly" of the many hillocks on which the Fattoria's 50 hectares of vineyards extend. Obtained from the vinification of Morellino grapes, a native clone of Sangiovese, on the initiative of Fattoria Mantellassi, a clonal selection of the vine (carried out by the Rauscedo Cooperative Nurseries) began in this vineyard, leading to the approval, and therefore official recognition, of three particular clones. In the winery, traditional red wine vinification is carried out in small 50 hectolitre tanks, with a long maceration period to extract all the colour and tannins from the grapes. Then, at the end of vinification, Le Sentinelle matures in French oak barriques for about 20 months, before bottling and final ageing in the bottle. An important red wine, able to stand up well to the passage of time, this Morellino di Scansano Riserva calls loudly for a pairing with red meats, cured meats and medium-aged cheeses.

Coming from Pistoia, the Mantellassi family moved to the area of Scansano and Magliano around 1860 to work as "potini" and "grafters". The planting of the first vineyards took place a century later, in 1960, when the first four hectares were created in Banditaccia. Today, the Fattoria can count on about one hundred hectares of vineyards extending over some of the many hills of the Fattoria. Here Sangiovese is the absolute protagonist. And with it varieties such as Alicante, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Canaiolo Nero, Malvasia Nera, Ciliegiolo, and the "white" Vermentino and Sauvignon. The Mantellassi Winery, on the other hand, is located in a strategic position, a few kilometres from Magliano in Toscana and close to each of the vineyards. This makes it possible, during the harvest period, to optimise work and have the grapes in the cellar very quickly, preserving all their best characteristics.
