Conte Guicciardini, Via Fezzana 45 /49 – Montespertoli (FI)
A red with aromas of sour cherries, magnolia berries, dried flowers, mushrooms and nutmeg. Medium-bodied with fine, powdery tannins. Juicy on the palate with plenty of fruit and spice. Drink now.
Il Cortile, Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG, is the result of years of work by Castello di Poppiano, aimed at producing wines of excellence, faithful to their origins. The optimal exposure of the vineyards and low yields are the basis of the wine's quality. Sangiovese for 85%, Canaiolo and Colorino for the remainder, this Chianti is fermented in thermo-controlled vats, with a maceration phase lasting about two weeks. Then, after racking, it matures partly for 4-6 months in oak barrels. An ageing phase in the bottle completes the production cycle. Ruby in colour with purple highlights, this Tuscan red has typical aromas that open with fruity hints and a good balance between tannic and alcoholic components. The finish is long and elegant. Again, this is an excellent 'meat' wine. Fresh and well-balanced in all its components, this Chianti del Colli Fiorentini DOCG accompanies steak, Florentine-style, but also boards of cold cuts and medium-aged cheeses.
The Guicciardini, one of the oldest Florentine families, had a prominent position in the political, social and economic life of Florence since 1200. Their history is inextricably linked to that of the Castello di Poppiano, a medieval building erected around the year 1000 as a fortress to defend Florence from the outside. An act of inheritance from 1199 confirms that it has belonged to the Guicciardini family for at least nine centuries. Today, the castle is one of the most important realities of the 'Chianti Colli Fiorentini' DOCG. The good soils, locally called 'alberese', clayey but rich in skeleton and well drained, are the precondition for obtaining fine wines. The vinification cellar is adjacent to the castle, while the maturation cellar, in oak barrels and barriques, is located in the basement, where the optimum temperature is maintained naturally. Since 2015, Castello di Poppiano has also been joined by another estate, Belvedere-Campòli, in Chianti Classico. Then there is Massi di Mandorlaia, located in Maremma, in this case within the MoreIlino di Scansano appellation.
