Querciabella, Via di Barbiano, 17, 50022 Greve in Chianti FI
Plenty of sweet berry and cherry character with hints of stone and fresh mushrooms. Chocolate, too. It’s medium-bodied with a solid core of fruit and a chewy yet refined texture. Flavorful finish. Solid and very integrated. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Drink or hold.
You couldn't ask more from a wine. For elegance, power and refinement. We are talking about Querciabella's Chianti Classico DOCG, one of the noblest expressions of the typical Tuscan red. In this case, the Sangiovese vineyards used for the production of the wine are distributed in different areas of the Classica zone, i.e. the most historic, of Chianti. At altitudes ranging from 350 to 550 metres above sea level, where very different microclimates characterise the grapes harvested. Once in the cellar, the grapes are first destemmed and then sent to steel vats, where spontaneous fermentation takes place. Then, after racking and complete malolactic fermentation, the wine is put into barriques and tonneaux mainly used for its maturation period. Intense ruby red, notes of red fruit and delicate spices clearly emerge on the nose. Hence violet and liquorice. A fine, elegant red, thanks to the perfect blend of different terroirs, this Chianti Classico is perfectly balanced, with ripe, fine tannins and a long, pleasant finish. Chianti Classico, especially as rich as this, calls for the most traditional of pairings, that with T-bone steak, and a side of white beans seasoned with a drizzle of oil.
His name is Giuseppe 'Pepito' Castiglioni, an industrial entrepreneur and lifelong wine lover. In 1974, driven more by passion than anything else, he bought a hectare of vineyard in Chianti. Thus began the story of Querciabella, which, in the space of a few years, grew exponentially, extending as far as the Maremma. The goal, of course, is high quality. After all, the models inspired are the elegant wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. Querciabella, however, immediately has an extra gear. In fact, thanks to Pepito's son Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni, a long process of conversion to organic viticulture began immediately. It was 1988 and Querciabella was one of the first companies in Italy to adopt this practice. Today, almost 50 years later, Querciabella is considered one of the most innovative realities in Italy. Today, the company can count on a total of over 100 hectares in Chianti Classico and 32 in Maremma. The vineyards, rich in biodiversity, have altitudes ranging from 300 to 600 metres.
