From a very hot and dry vintage, the Tommasi 2017 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is supple and round with plenty of soft fruit at its core. The vintage is less complex, with less depth, but it does deliver sweet tones of cherry, ripe plum and crème de cassis. Light shadings of spice and tobacco help to flesh it out. Tommasi's classic Amarone is a blend of 50% Corvina, 30% Corvinone, 15% Rondinella and 5% Oseleta. The grapes are sourced from the Le Groletta and Conca d'Oro vineyards, which have medium-rich limestone soils and lots of fossils.

  • James Suckling 93

Needs air to bring out the intense, bright red berries with some dates and spicy, meaty notes. Full-bodied with a tight but forward-driven palate, spurred along by clean acidity and firm, fine tannins. It’s all there, but needs time to mellow out. Try from 2023.

  • Wine Enthusiast 90

This has a shy nose that eventually reveals whiffs of stewed prune, leather and tilled earth. The solid palate offers baked plum, candied raisin and a dollop of vanilla alongside polished, rather relaxed tannins before a bitter almond finish. Drink through 2026. KERIN O’KEEFE

  • If you belong, like many of us fans, to the category of people who struggle to find the right occasion to uncork a bottle of Amarone, you should know that with this bottle, Tommasi has thought of you. The declared objective is to break down preconceptions and finally put on the market a bottle of a great Amarone Classico, but above all a great wine to drink, with pleasure and regularity. Without feeling overwhelmed but without sacrificing elegance and roundness. Not an everyday wine, mind you. But in any case a wine of extreme pleasantness that is able to mature, for a long time, in the cellar. That's why you should always buy at least two bottles. The first to be drunk immediately, perhaps during a long chat with friends, because great wines are also good drunk alone. The second, on the other hand, can easily end up at the bottom of the cellar, to be discovered, with satisfaction, when we will have forgotten the purchase. Pouring the first glass, we will remember with joy that long chat in the middle of the night. And we'll know for sure that we're going to end up late tonight too.

From Veneto to the whole world. Tommasi is a family business founded in 1902 and today it is run by the fourth generation of the family. A name that is, for many wine lovers, a guarantee of absolute quality. Over the years the company has grown a lot, acquiring vineyards and properties in different parts of Italy. Today the Tommasi Family Estates is a solid business reality, which can count on a total of about 570 hectares of vineyards, divided into five regions. Seven estates between Valpolicella Classica and Puglia, passing through Lombardy, Tuscany and now even Basilicata. Unlike other entrepreneurial realities that, as they have grown, have gradually lost their taste for quality research and their passion for the territory, at Tommasi these values have remained central. A great company awarded by international critics and present with its products in dozens of markets, which has been able to maintain a family spirit.
