Rosso Piceno DOC Superiore Vigna Messieri is the result of a tradition that goes back generations of passionate winegrowers. The vines are rooted in clay soils exposed to the south-west, at an altitude between 230 and 250 metres above sea level. Here, the mild climate of the Marche region and its geological variety offer ideal conditions for growing vines. Vigna Messieri is made from a blend of 60% Montepulciano and 40% Sangiovese, two of the most emblematic grape varieties of central Italy. The Montepulciano gives the wine body and a beautiful intense colour. The Sangiovese, on the other hand, brings acidity and fruity aromas, creating a perfect balance. After the harvest, the grapes are brought to the cellar to begin their processing. It starts with the maceration phase at a controlled temperature to preserve the fresh and fruity aromas of the fruit. Then, after fermentation, the wine matures in 50 hectolitre oak barrels for about 18 months, before being bottled and aged for at least another 12 months. In the glass, Rosso Piceno DOC Superiore Vigna Messieri has a beautiful bright red colour with garnet hues. On the nose, intense floral notes of violet and lavender, followed by toasted cocoa aromas. On the palate, however, the wine surprises with its duality: silky, well-integrated tannins combine with fruit under spirits, with hints of cocoa giving added pleasantness. The Vigna Messieri has considerable ageing potential, thanks to its solid structure and well-balanced acidity. Stored in the right conditions, it can evolve and improve for more than a decade, developing further aromatic and taste complexities.
We are located in the rolling hills of the Marche region, where the Adriatic Sea meets the Sibillini Mountains. This is where Tenuta Cocci Grifoni, a winery founded in the 1930s by Guido Cocci Grifoni, is located. A far-sighted pioneer, Guido laid the first vineyards in what we now know to be an area with a vocation for viticulture, laying the foundations of a reality that still belongs to his family almost a century later. Today, the vineyards extend over about 60 hectares of the company's total 100 hectares, surrounded by centuries-old woods and olive groves. This unspoilt landscape, characterised by a Mediterranean climate with mountain influences, gives the grapes unique characteristics that translate into wines of great value. Between the rows, both native and international varieties are grown. In particular, Pecorino, Montepulciano and Passerina, which best express the character of the territory. Then Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon that, despite their French origin, adapt perfectly here in the Marche region to produce very interesting wines. From the very beginning, Tenuta Cocci Grifoni has made sustainability one of its founding values. Today, the company is SQNPI certified (Sistema Qualità Nazionale Produzione Integrata - National Quality System for Integrated Production) and adheres to environmentally friendly farming practices, such as integrated pest management and the use of only organic fertilisers. In addition, 30% of the farm's surface area is used as forest, to better protect biodiversity.
