"San Basso" Rosso Piceno Superiore 2021
  • Born from the fascinating hills of the Marche region, Tenuta Cocci Grifoni's Rosso Piceno DOC Superiore San Basso. A true tribute to the territory, a celebration of the beauty and richness of these lands. The estate's vineyards are located on hills at an altitude between 230 and 250 metres above sea level, with a south-west exposure that guarantees optimal sunshine. The soils here are clayey and contribute to giving the wines a robust structure and extraordinary aromatic complexity. San Basso is a blend of 55% Montepulciano and 45% Sangiovese, two grape varieties that together create a perfect balance between body and freshness. Harvesting is done manually in the first ten days of October. Vinification begins with maceration of the grapes at a controlled temperature, followed by alcoholic fermentation. The ageing process is then divided into two phases: 50% of the blend matures in stainless steel and in 40/50 hectolitre Slavonian oak casks for 12 months. The remaining 50%, on the other hand, matures in cement. After bottling, the wine then matures for at least another 4 months before release, thus acquiring further complexity. San Basso reveals itself to be enveloping and complex. On the nose, intense notes of sour cherries in spirit and violets emerge, enriched by fresh nuances of rosemary. In the mouth, it is harmonious and well-balanced, with silky tannins and a freshness that makes every sip satisfying. The fruity and floral notes blend elegantly, giving a long and pleasant finish. This wine is ideal with rich, flavoursome dishes. Perfect with red meats, game and mature cheeses, it also pairs beautifully with robust first courses such as pappardelle with wild boar ragout or baked lasagne.

We are located in the rolling hills of the Marche, where the Adriatic Sea meets the Sibillini Mountains. This is where Tenuta Cocci Grifoni, a winery founded in the 1930s by Guido Cocci Grifoni, is located. A far-sighted pioneer, Guido laid the first vineyards in what we now know to be an area with a vocation for viticulture, laying the foundations of a reality that still belongs to his family almost a century later. Today, the vineyards extend over about 60 hectares of the company's total 100 hectares, surrounded by centuries-old woods and olive groves. This unspoilt landscape, characterised by a Mediterranean climate with mountain influences, gives the grapes unique characteristics that translate into wines of great value. Between the rows, both native and international varieties are grown. In particular, Pecorino, Montepulciano and Passerina, which best express the character of the territory. Then Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon that, despite their French origin, adapt perfectly here in the Marche region to produce very interesting wines. From the very beginning, Tenuta Cocci Grifoni has made sustainability one of its founding values. Today, the company is SQNPI certified (Sistema Qualità Nazionale Produzione Integrata - National Quality System for Integrated Production) and adheres to environmentally friendly farming practices, such as integrated pest management and the use of only organic fertilisers. In addition, 30% of the farm's surface area is used as woodland, to better protect biodiversity.
