Lacrima is an ancient grape variety, cultivated exclusively in the territory of Morro d'Alba. Legend has it that its origins date back to 1100 when it was used to produce Frederick Barbarossa's favourite wine. Difficult to grow compared to the better known international varieties, it has long been at risk of extinction. It is thought, in fact, that when the DOC was recognized in 1985, there were only 7 hectares left. The name Lacrima comes from its fragile skin, which tends to break when it ripens, leaving purple tears dripping down. The one proposed here by Marotti Campi is vinified in steel and aged for 12 months in used barriques, therefore neutral from the point of view of the transfer of fragrances. In the glass it has a beautiful deep ruby red colour with violet hues. On the nose rose, blackberry, pink pepper and juniper berries. In the mouth it is fruity and spicy, with soft tannins.
Marotti Campi is a 100% family business. Let's start with this as a fact. The origin is lost in time. What is certain is that in the mid-19th century, the Marotti family bought the property in the Sant'Amico district of Morro d'Alba and built the villa there as the centre of the sharecropping business. Little has changed since then. The family is always the same and also in the cellar and in the countryside many of the collaborators are the heirs of the first workers. There's no better guarantee of continuity. 120 hectares of property, of which about 53 are planted with vines, with hilly profiles and an average height of about 180 metres above sea level. Lacrima and Verdicchio, with plantings from 35 to 10 years old, are the most cultivated vines. Then a small part of Montepulciano, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon that are used for the production of non-DOC wines. The decidedly modern winery was built in 1999. It is a functional and self-sufficient structure also from the energy point of view, thanks to the solar panels installed on the roof in 2010. Respect for nature and the environment are at the heart of the values of the company and the family.
