There is nothing more pleasant than a delicate glass of Lagrein, the noble native wine of South Tyrol. Lagrein has been cultivated here since the 14th century and is now rightly considered one of the best red wines in the region. Cantina Cooperativa di San Michele Appiano offers it in this classic version, produced from grapes harvested in Gries, near Bolzano and around Lake Caldaro. Harvested by hand when fully ripe, the grapes are quickly brought to the winery to begin processing. Fermentation in stainless steel, after racking the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and refinement in large wooden barrels. The result is a red wine characterised by a dark colour, even tending to black. The aromas are intensely fruity and reminiscent of cherry, violet and blackberry. In the mouth, however, it is immediately pleasantly velvety. Decidedly soft, it has a long, spicy finish. A wine that can be enjoyed just a few years after harvesting, it should be served not too hot to enhance the freshness of its bouquet. Excellent in combination with savoury dishes, such as lamb, game and blue cheeses.
About 2 million bottles per year. Very high average quality. Around 350 members. These are the numbers, and the facts, that characterise the fine cooperative winery in San Michele Appiano. Founded in 1907 by a few visionary winegrowers, it is now one of the most solid wineries in Northern Italy, with wines that have won awards all over the world. If you think of Alto Adige and its good varietals, San Michele Appiano is a must. Its production, in fact, is dominated by wines made from the typical grapes of the region, from Gewürztraminer to Müller Thurgau. From Sauvignon to Riesling. From Pinot Bianco to Lagrein. All mountain grapes that grow thanks to the mild climate and the unique soils of the vineyards. Today the winery can count on around 400 hectares of vineyards. An enormous area, if one considers the Alto Adige region, but small in absolute terms. Especially when one considers the number of members of the winery. In vineyard management, a team of technicians and agronomists is constantly at the side of each member, offering valuable advice on how to manage their rows. The result is grapes of the highest quality, which are then processed in the winery using the most innovative winemaking techniques to bring out every nuance. Welcome to Alto Adige.
