Château Montrose, 3 Grand Vignolles, 33180 Saint-Estèphe, Francia
La Dame de Montrose is the second wine produced by Château Montrose, a renowned estate located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, in the heart of the Médoc in Bordeaux. Saint-Estèphe is the northernmost appellation in the Médoc, characterised by a privileged position along the Gironde estuary. The vineyards benefit from a soil composed of terraces of gravel mixed with sand on the surface, with a clay subsoil. This combination guarantees excellent drainage and optimal water reserves, allowing the vines to thrive even during particularly dry summers. The proximity to the estuary, on the other hand, helps to mitigate temperature variations, creating an ideal microclimate for viticulture. The blend of La Dame de Montrose is mainly composed of Merlot (61%), followed by Cabernet Sauvignon (32%), Petit Verdot (5%) and Cabernet Franc (2%). The vinification process involves a careful selection of the grapes, followed by fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. The wine is then aged for 18 months in 225-litre French oak barriques, a percentage of which are new, to enrich the aromatic profile and tannic structure of the wine. Intense red in colour, the nose offers a complex bouquet with notes of ripe fruit such as blackberries and plums, enriched by hints of sweet spices, liquorice and a touch of menthol. In the mouth, the wine stands out for its richness, a soft texture and elegant tannins, culminating in a fresh and aromatic finish.
Château Montrose is located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, on the left bank of the Gironde. Classified as a Second Grand Cru in 1855, the estate covers 95 hectares of vineyards in a single block, a rare feature in the region. The proximity to the Gironde estuary plays a crucial role in the vineyard's microclimate. The water moderates extreme summer temperatures, while protecting the vines from spring frosts and hot summers. In addition, the gravel in the soil absorbs heat during the day and releases it at night, promoting optimal ripening of the grapes. The company is currently owned by brothers Martin and Olivier Bouygues, who acquired it in 2006. Since then, they have undertaken an ambitious programme of renovation, with a strong focus on environmental sustainability. Initiatives implemented include recycling rainwater, using solar energy and constructing low-energy buildings.
