Quite a bit of vanilla oak, but this graceful and creamy dry white takes the oak in its stride. Plenty of flint and hay character, too. Very good concentration and length, the finish firmly structured, but not a jot overbearing. Drink or hold.
Hold on. This time we are dealing with a true icon of Italian wine. From Alto Adige, to be precise. Elena Walch's Grande Cuvée Beyond the Clouds is produced each year from a selection of the estate's best grapes, with a predominance of Chardonnay. The starting point is the fruit from the estate's two single vineyards, the percentage of which can vary slightly from year to year. The starting date of the harvest, however, is determined by the optimal maturity of the Chardonnay. Being a blend, in fact, the harvest and processing of all the grapes takes place together, on the same day. After fermentation, the wine is left in contact with its own yeasts and periodically undergoes "battonage" for a period of about 3 months. Finally, French barriques are used for the subsequent maturation, in which the wine rests for about 10 months. After bottling, the wine then undergoes a further six months of refinement in the bottle. Produced since 2000, this wine has received dozens of prizes and awards from the most severe wine critics and has been included - rightly - in the restricted circle of the best Italian white wines. With its intense bright yellow colour, the Grande Cuvée "beyond the clouds" reveals all its complexity already on the nose, where it ranges from complex aromatic nuances with notes of white flowers and nuances of yellow-fleshed fruit and pineapple to hints of minerals. Complex and refined, it presents itself on the palate with a delicate hint of wood. Fineness and strength are the characteristics that identify the sip. Served slightly chilled, it goes well with richly flavoured first courses, preferably fish-based, but also with cheeses and white meats.
Elena Walch is a name that needs no introduction among Italian wine lovers (and probably most of the world). Elena Walch is simply synonymous with quality wine from South Tyrol. A family-run business, Elena Walch has always been a promoter of quality and innovation. An architect by profession, Elena married the heir to one of the oldest wine families in the region and was able to introduce important modernisation concepts into the family business, which is now run by her daughters Julia and Karoline. The principle is that the wines should be a unique expression of their soil, climate and work in the vineyard. And that the vineyard should be worked according to the principles of sustainability in order to be left as a legacy for future generations. With around 60 hectares in production, including the two vineyards VIGNA Castel Ringberg in Kaltern and VIGNA Kastelaz in Tramin, Elena Walch's estate is certainly one of the most interesting wineries in South Tyrol.
