Gewürztraminer is ‘the’ aromatic white wine grape par excellence, famous for its intense spicy and floral notes. In South Tyrol, it expresses a unique finesse and elegance, thanks to the cool climate and mineral-rich soils. A curiosity about the name: Gewürztraminer derives from the German ‘gewürz’, meaning ‘spice’, in reference to the intense aromatic notes typical of this grape variety. A fine example of this is this Turmhof Gewürztraminer signed by Tiefenbrunner. ‘Turmhof’ is the name of the ancient castle that dominates the estate, a place rich in history and tradition. The grapes here come from selected vineyards on various slopes, reaching heights of up to 900 metres. The soil here is characterised by a great variety of elements: it ranges from gravelly soils rich in limestone to clay soils. The vinification of Turmhof Gewürztraminer makes use of the most modern winemaking technology. The grapes are initially macerated for eight hours to best extract the aromas, then fermented in cement barrels and matured on the fine lees for an extended period. This process preserves the wine's freshness and aromaticity. Brilliant golden yellow in colour, the nose reveals an intense and complex bouquet, with notes of rose, lychee, honey and exotic spices. In the mouth, it is full and enveloping, characterised by a beautiful persistence. The pleasant acidity balances its sweetness. Good already, this Gewürztraminer is a wine that can age for several years, developing more complex and spicy notes. A versatile wine, it pairs well with blue cheeses, spicy fish dishes, Asian cuisine and even fruit desserts.
