"Turmhof" Gewürztraminer Alto Adige DOC 2022
  • Gewürztraminer is ‘the’ aromatic white wine grape par excellence, famous for its intense spicy and floral notes. In South Tyrol, it expresses a unique finesse and elegance, thanks to the cool climate and mineral-rich soils. A curiosity about the name: Gewürztraminer derives from the German ‘gewürz’, meaning ‘spice’, in reference to the intense aromatic notes typical of this grape variety. A fine example of this is this Turmhof Gewürztraminer signed by Tiefenbrunner. ‘Turmhof’ is the name of the ancient castle that dominates the estate, a place rich in history and tradition. The grapes here come from selected vineyards on various slopes, reaching heights of up to 900 metres. The soil here is characterised by a great variety of elements: it ranges from gravelly soils rich in limestone to clay soils. The vinification of Turmhof Gewürztraminer makes use of the most modern winemaking technology. The grapes are initially macerated for eight hours to best extract the aromas, then fermented in cement barrels and matured on the fine lees for an extended period. This process preserves the wine's freshness and aromaticity. Brilliant golden yellow in colour, the nose reveals an intense and complex bouquet, with notes of rose, lychee, honey and exotic spices. In the mouth, it is full and enveloping, characterised by a beautiful persistence. The pleasant acidity balances its sweetness. Good already, this Gewürztraminer is a wine that can age for several years, developing more complex and spicy notes. A versatile wine, it pairs well with blue cheeses, spicy fish dishes, Asian cuisine and even fruit desserts.

Today we find ourselves in the rolling hills of Alto Adige, where the historic Tiefenbrunner winery is located. A name that, for wine lovers (Italian but not only), immediately evokes wines of extraordinary elegance and complexity, the fruit of centuries of experience and profound knowledge of the territory. For more than a century and a half, the Tiefenbrunner family has handed down their passion for wine-growing from generation to generation, carefully cultivating their vineyards and selecting the finest grapes. Today, it is Christof Tiefenbrunner who runs the company together with his wife Sabine. Seventh generation of a dynasty that has made quality its trademark. The winery is based in Niclara, in an ancient 12th century fortress surrounded by a vast park that seems straight out of a fairy tale. Here, among century-old plants, a pond and sculptures from the late 19th century, time seems to stand still. But Tiefenbrunner is not only an enchanted place. It is also an avant-garde company that constantly invests in research and innovation. The winery is equipped with a hydroelectric power station that guarantees energy self-sufficiency, testifying to a strong commitment to environmental sustainability. Today, the winery can count on more than 25 hectares, spread over different terroirs that give the wines a wide range of aromas and nuances. In addition to its own vineyards, the company also works with other winegrowers in the area, selecting only the best grapes.
