This has plenty of the yellow-rose aroma of gewurz, but is very subtle for the grape with a whiff of smoked bacon, plus touches of sandalwood and allspice. Quite creamy and winey, but no hint of heaviness on the palate, the long finish very supple and delicate. Drink or hold.
Take a breath and then read: Alto Adige Valle Isarco Gewürztraminer DOC Praepositus. Here we are in the presence of one of the most interesting wines from the historic winery of the Abbey of Novacella. Gewürztraminer, a great aromatic grape variety, has found the right soil for its roots in Alto Adige over the centuries. Despite being one of the oldest wineries in the world, the Abbey's winery has never missed an opportunity to renew itself in order to surprise the many wine lovers around the world with wines characterised by an unmistakable style. Pale golden yellow in colour, this mountain white has intense and elegant aromas of orange, rose flowers, lychee, ginger and coriander. On the palate, it is juicy and aromatic, refreshing and mineral. Good today, this Gewürztraminer is in no hurry to be uncorked. Its producers are certain that, if stored well, it has a very interesting ageing potential. Even 10 years. To appreciate it at its best, it requires a slightly spicy combination on the table. Excellent with risotto with gorgonzola, pears and walnuts. But also with prawns with curry sauce and basmati rice.
It is impossible to think of South Tyrol as a wine-producing area without looking at the hills where the vineyards of the historic Abbey of Novacella are located. This is one of the oldest still active wineries in the world. The first documentary evidence of the Abbey dates back to 1100. In 1177, to be precise, Pope Alexander III granted the monastery possession of the nearby vineyards and over the centuries, through donations, foundations, purchases and exchanges, the Abbey accumulated considerable vineyard holdings. Some of these are still in the hands of the present-day company. From the bottom of the valley, i.e. from about 600 metres above sea level, the vineyards of Novacella reach an altitude of almost 900 metres. Even today, many farmers still bring their best grapes to the abbey's wine cellar so that they can be carefully processed into the excellent wines that are appreciated all over the world.
