“This is a classic expression of Lagrein with all the softness and exuberant fruit weight that you should expect of this grape. The Cantina Terlano 2018 Alto Adige Lagrein Riserva Gries exhibits an inky dark appearance with purple and blackish hues. To the finish, this vintage offers dustings of earth and spice; however, the core of the wine is packed tight with fruity richness. Lagrein is normally not a very ageworthy grape, but this bottle will likely sail through to the 10year mark. Some 45,000 bottles were made.“ –M.L.
Very dense blackberry and forest-berry nose, but somehow it manages to be delicate too, black-tea and licorice notes developing with aeration. Concentrated and plush, the tannins are really fine for this often hard-edged grape variety, gently leading you into the warm and supple crescendo finish. Drink or hold.
The alluvial soils that cover the Bolzano district of Gries have always been an ideal location for growing Lagrein. This is attested to by written sources dating as far back as 1379. One fine example is this red wine from the Cantina di Terlano, made from grapes that are harvested by hand and quickly brought to the winery for careful vinification. After alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine is transferred to wooden barrels for the delicate finishing stages. Here it remains for no less than a year, during which it also undergoes what is known as malolactic fermentation. Part of the wine rests in large wooden barrels, and part in barriques, about a third of which are new. Ruby red with garnet highlights and a delicate violet veil, this Gries has a particularly intriguing bouquet, with earthy and mineral notes that combine well with the fruity aromas, especially black cherry, plum jam and bitter chocolate. In the mouth, these fruity and spicy notes recur, resulting in a full, articulate and complex wine.
Founded in 1893, the Cantina di Terlano is one of the most avant-garde wine cooperatives in the whole of Alto Adige. Its 143 current members cultivate 190 hectares of vineyards, producing a total annual output of around one and a half million bottles, divided into two lines, plus a few rarities of great oenological value. In the modern wine cellar, only DOC wines are produced, especially white wines, thanks to the new area created in 2009, where the wines have all the space they need to grow and develop to the full. From an architectural point of view, the Terlan Winery also deserves special mention. On the outside, part of the building has been covered with red porphyry, the typical rock of the area, while the roof of the winery has been greened and covered with vines, thus blending into the surrounding cultivated landscape. The wine archive of the cellar is unique in Italy with its 100,000 bottles from the 1955 vintage to the present day. However, the cellar also holds some ancient treasures: some bottles dating back to the year of its foundation!
