This very well structured pinot noir also has a ton of bright blackberry and forest-berry aromas, plus spicy and rooty overtones. In spite of all the fruit at the front of the palate, it turns decisively dry at the long finish, which has quite some oak, but also plenty of mountain freshness. Drink or hold.
Were it not for the writing in two languages, Italian and German, this Pinot Noir could easily be mistaken for one of the (many) good Burgundy reds. Same elegance. Same finesse. Same character. But (luckily) this time the bottle in front of us does not come from France but from the heart of Alto Adige. And to be precise, from the cellars of the Abbazia di Novacella. Fermented in stainless steel with maceration on the skins for 15 days, after racking and malolactic conversion, this wine matures in French barriques and tonneaux for 24 months. The result is a glass that is tinged with a beautiful ruby red colour with rosy hues. On the nose what is immediately perceived is the typical red fruit. Black cherry and blackcurrant above all. Then undergrowth, cinnamon and cloves. As already mentioned, this is an extremely elegant and seductive wine, well supported by the right acidity that does not undermine its natural velvety soul. A wine that, its producers are certain, is in no hurry to finish in the glass. Properly stored, in the dark and in a cool, damp cellar, it can easily wait up to 20 years, maturing and evolving into a small, living work of art. On the table it enhances both meat and fish dishes. Excellent with lamb and salmon.
It is impossible to think of South Tyrol as a wine-producing area without looking at the hills where the vineyards of the historic Abbey of Novacella are located. This is one of the oldest still active wineries in the world. The first documentary evidence of the Abbey dates back to 1100. In 1177, to be precise, Pope Alexander III granted the monastery possession of the nearby vineyards and over the centuries, through donations, foundations, purchases and exchanges, the Abbey accumulated considerable vineyard holdings. Some of these are still in the hands of the present-day company. From the bottom of the valley, i.e. from about 600 metres above sea level, the vineyards of Novacella reach an altitude of almost 900 metres. Even today, many farmers still bring their best grapes to the abbey's wine cellar so that they can be carefully processed into the excellent wines that are appreciated all over the world.
