One of the most representative wines of the Torrevento winery, Vigna Pedale, Castel del Monte DOCG Riserva is a red wine that combines tradition and territory in a unique sensory experience. We are in the heart of Puglia. Here the territory of Castel del Monte is famous for its octagonal castle of the same name, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which dominates the surrounding hills. In this area, specifically in Contrada Pedale, are the Torrevento vineyards, at an altitude of between 400 and 500 metres above sea level. The calcareous-clayey soil and the Mediterranean climate create ideal conditions for viticulture, giving the wines unique characteristics. The Castel del Monte denomination of controlled and guaranteed origin represents Apulian oenological excellence, and the mention ‘Riserva’ indicates that the wine undergoes a long ageing process, including at least one year in wood. Vigna Pedale is produced 100% with Nero di Troia grapes, an autochthonous Apulian vine known for its high polyphenolic content. The origins of Nero di Troia are shrouded in mystery, but a fascinating legend has it that the Greek hero Diomedes brought vine shoots to Apulia after the destruction of ancient Troy, thus giving rise to this grape variety. The harvest takes place between the end of October and the beginning of November, with the grapes being picked by hand to ensure that only the best bunches are selected. The vinification process involves fermentation with long maceration, followed by ageing for 8 months in steel tanks and 12 months in large oak barrels. This process enhances the characteristics of the grape variety, giving the wine complexity and depth. Vigna Pedale is ruby red in colour with garnet reflections. The bouquet is intense and fragrant, with balsamic notes and hints of small red fruits. Finally, in the mouth it is elegant, with a well-defined tannic structure and spicy hints that enrich the palate. Over the years, if well preserved, Vigna Pedale develops further aromatic nuances and greater harmony. This wine goes well with meat menus, savoury first courses and hard cheeses.
The history of Torrevento began over a century ago. In 1913, Francesco Liantonio, grandfather of the current president, embarked on the ship ‘Hamburg’ bound for New York at the age of sixteen, in search of fortune. In the United States, selling ice on the street, he managed to build up a small fortune that allowed him to return to his beloved Puglia in 1923. He settled in Palo del Colle and started producing and selling extra virgin olive oil and processing grapes. In 1948 the Liantonio brothers bought a former 17th century Benedictine monastery and 57 hectares of surrounding vineyards in the ‘Torre del Vento’ district, in the heart of the Murgia region of Bari. Then, in 1950, Gaetano Liantonio inherited the estate, renovated it and founded the ‘Vinicola Torrevento’, which became a limited liability company in 1989. The winery specialises in the production of Castel del Monte DOC wines and was one of the ‘pioneers’ in the rediscovery of Nero di Troia. Today Torrevento manages over 500 hectares of vineyards in Puglia, pursuing a balance between innovation and tradition. The winery bases its development on research, sustainability and quality, values that have guided the founders in creating wines of excellence representative of the culture and flavours of Puglia.
