Puglia IGT Rosso, Kebir is one of the good labels offered by the Torrevento winery. This wine comes from the Pedale district, in the territory of Castel del Monte, an area renowned for the production of high quality wines. The district is located in the heart of the Murgia region of Apulia, a plateau characterised by calcareous and clayey soil. This area is dominated by the majestic Castel del Monte, a 13th century fortress built by Emperor Frederick II and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Torrevento vineyards extend between 400 and 500 metres above sea level, benefitting from an ideal microclimate, with marked temperature variations between day and night that favour optimal ripening of the grapes. Kebir is a blend of three grape varieties: Nero di Troia, Cabernet Sauvignon and Aglianico. The grapes are harvested by hand in mid-October, followed by vinification with a long maceration on the skins, to extract the best colour, aromas and tannins. At the end of fermentation, the wine is aged for 8 months in steel tanks, followed by another 12 months in oak barrels, where it acquires complexity and softness. This ageing process helps integrate the different components of the wine, giving it balance and depth. Kebir has an intense and impenetrable purple colour. The nose reveals a complex bouquet, with notes of blackberry and blackcurrant jam, enriched by hints of spices and cocoa. In the mouth it is full, soft and harmonious, with a long and persistent finish. Notes of ripe red fruit, spices and delicate balsamic nuances emerge, giving great finesse and elegance. Ideal with a meat-based menu, flavoursome first courses and hard cheeses. Also excellent with roast red meats, game and traditional Puglian dishes such as orecchiette with meat sauce.
The history of Torrevento began over a century ago. In 1913, Francesco Liantonio, grandfather of the current president, embarked on the ship ‘Hamburg’ bound for New York at the age of sixteen, in search of fortune. In the United States, selling ice on the street, he managed to build up a small fortune that allowed him to return to his beloved Puglia in 1923. He settled in Palo del Colle and started producing and selling extra virgin olive oil and processing grapes. In 1948 the Liantonio brothers bought a former 17th century Benedictine monastery and 57 hectares of surrounding vineyards in the ‘Torre del Vento’ district, in the heart of the Murgia region of Bari. Then, in 1950, Gaetano Liantonio inherited the estate, renovated it and founded the ‘Vinicola Torrevento’, which became a limited liability company in 1989. The winery specialises in the production of Castel del Monte DOC wines and was one of the ‘pioneers’ in the rediscovery of Nero di Troia. Today Torrevento manages over 500 hectares of vineyards in Puglia, pursuing a balance between innovation and tradition. The winery bases its development on research, sustainability and quality, values that have guided the founders in creating wines of excellence representative of the culture and flavours of Puglia.
