    Pinotage 2020
  • If you have never heard of Pinotage, and you want to taste something really interesting, this is (without a doubt) the right bottle. Let's start with the grape variety. Pinotage is South Africa's quintessential native grape variety. This, in fact, is the only country where it is cultivated in any significant way. It is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, created by Abraham Perold right at Stellenbosch University. It was 1925. The one proposed here comes from the Stellenbosch area, one of South Africa's most prized. Hand-picked grapes to ensure good selection upstream, once in the winery a small portion, about 9%, ferments in second- and third-use French oak barrels. In the same containers, then, the wine matures slowly for about 12 months. Bright crimson red in color, the nose reveals aromas of berries, with subtle hints of licorice and sweet spices. A hint of raspberry compote, black cherry and strawberry stands out in the mouth. Light and harmonious is the acidity. Soft, well-rounded tannins. A super versatile wine, it goes well with a variety of meat preparations.

Founded in 1688 by Frenchman Jacques Malan, Simonsig has always stood out in South Africa's rich landscape of wineries. Indeed, thanks to the family's incomparable winemaking experience and tradition, Simonsig-branded wines have always been considered benchmarks for the region, often proving to be innovative. When people talk about Simonsig, they also talk about the history of Méthode Cap Classique, which is the South African classic method first produced by the Stellenbosch winery itself. The year was 1971.
