Monteviejo -Valle de Uco, Mendoza, Argentina
It is called Petite Fleur Blend and is produced by Monteviejo. It is a wine with a beautiful personality, the result of extreme viticulture. We are in the Valle de Uco, one of the most prestigious and fascinating wine-growing areas in Mendoza, Argentina. This valley, located at about 1100 metres above sea level, offers a unique microclimate that is perfect for the cultivation of high-quality vines. The high altitude ensures a wide temperature range between day and night, favouring the development of intense aromas and optimal ripening of the grapes. Petite Fleur is a ‘Blend’ of four grape varieties that come together to create a complex and enveloping wine. The base is Merlot, which alone accounts for about 50% of the blend. Then Malbec (39%), Mendoza's flagship grape, Syrah (8%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (3%), which completes the blend with its tannic elegance and aromatic finesse. Harvesting, carried out manually in small 12 kg crates, allows the best bunches to be selected, maintaining the integrity of the grapes until vinification. Once in the cellar, the grapes undergo cold maceration at 7° C for 5 days. This process allows the maximum aromas and colour to be extracted from the skins without affecting the wine's natural acidity. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Subsequently, 70% of the wine matures for 12 months in 225-litre French oak barrels of second and third passage. Finally, the wine rests in the bottle for a further 6 months, thus reaching its full expression. In the Petite Fleur Blend glass, it has a deep, intense purple-red colour, with notes of red and black fruits, such as cherries, plums and blackberries, accompanied by hints of green pepper. In the mouth, the tannins are round and well integrated, offering a feeling of balance and harmony. The finish is long and persistent, with a subtle spicy vein inviting one to take another sip. A pleasantly versatile wine, it goes well with meat dishes. Try it, for example, with a gourmet hamburger, or with mature cheeses.
That of Monteviejo is a very special story, made up of passion, enterprise and a deep connection with the land. But that is not all. It is, in fact, a long journey that crosses borders and generations. But let us proceed in order. It all began in 1985, in Pomerol, Bordeaux. Here Catherine Péré Vergé bought Château Montviel, marking the beginning of a wine adventure that would leave an indelible mark. Over time, Catherine expanded her estate with other prestigious properties, such as Château La Violette and Château Le Gay, demonstrating her dedication to quality and her love of wine. So it was that at the end of the 1990s, in search of new challenges, Catherine was inspired by the invitation of the famous oenologist Michel Rolland and ventured to the other side of the world, to Argentina. In 1998, she founded her new winery here, Monteviejo, in the heart of the Valle de Uco, in Mendoza. Today Monteviejo is run with passion and expertise by Catherine's daughter Helene Parent and granddaughter Elise Treiber, who carry on the family legacy with the same enthusiasm and respect for the land that characterised the founder. Monteviejo is located 1110 metres above sea level, in an area that is ideal for viticulture. The company philosophy is based on clear principles: high planting density per hectare to reduce the yield per plant, small plots of 1-3 hectares for precise and differentiated control, and sustainable farming practices. Among the grape varieties cultivated, Malbec, the symbol of Argentina, obviously stands out. In particular, at La Consulta, the company has recovered a vineyard that is more than 100 years old, selecting unique plants that produce wines with great character and complexity.
