Pallagrello Nero Terre del Volturno IGT 2022
  • A small oenological gem from our beautiful southern Italy. We are talking about Terre del Volturno IGP Pallagrello Nero, proposed here by Azienda Agricola Il Verro. We find ourselves in the heart of Campania, among the gentle hills of Formicola, in the province of Caserta. The production area, known for its natural beauty and fertility, is washed by the waters of the Volturno river and benefits from an ideal climate, characterised by warm summers and mild winters. It is here that Pallagrello Nero, an indigenous vine and the protagonist of this wine, grows. Cultivated as early as the 17th century, this vine has undergone a rediscovery in recent decades, thanks to its ability to express the essence of the territory in which it grows. The Azienda Agricola Il Verro, which has embraced the philosophy of organic viticulture, takes great care in every phase of production. The grapes are harvested by hand in the first half of September and, once picked, are gently pressed to preserve the quality of the initial fruit. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, at the end of the transformation the wine rests on the fine lees for a few months, acquiring more structure and harmony. In the glass, the wine is an intense ruby red colour, bright and inviting. On the nose, hints of fresh fruit, especially cherry and plum, followed by delicate notes of almonds and broom and violet flowers, enrich the olfactory bouquet. In the mouth, it is characterised by savouriness and soft tannins. A velvety and enveloping sensation, with a long persistence and a finish that pleasantly recalls ripe fruit and sweet spices. It goes well with meat dishes, especially with game. Try it with rabbit stew, but also more complex dishes such as roasts and mature cheeses.

The Il Verro winery, located in the heart of the Caserta hills, was founded by Cesare Avenia in 2003. We are located between Monte Maggiore and the Volturno river. This area, much loved by the Bourbon royal family, is famous for wild boar hunting and offers ideal conditions for viticulture thanks to its privileged position and continental climate. The winery takes its name from the ‘boar’ (the male of the wild boar) and produces high quality artisanal and organic wines from indigenous grape varieties typical of the region, including Casavecchia, Pallagrello Bianco and Nero and Coda di Pecora. Rediscovered after years of oblivion, these interesting autochthonous varieties are at the heart of the production. The excellently exposed vineyards are surrounded by rich Mediterranean scrub vegetation consisting of centuries-old olive, walnut and cherry trees, which contribute to a perfect environment for the vines to grow.
