      Etna Rosso DOC 2022
    • Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe, and is an area of particular interest to all wine lovers. The volcanic soils, rich in minerals and nutrients, give the grapes unmistakable characteristics. In the specific case of this Etna DOC Rosso di Cottanera, the basic grape variety is Nerello Mascalese, a native of Etna, which prefers cool climates and complex soils. Produced with careful vinification that respects the grapes and the terroir, this Sicilian red reveals good character. The grapes are harvested manually in crates, to preserve their integrity, and are immediately transported to the cellar. Here, destemming and alcoholic fermentation take place at a controlled temperature for about 10-12 days. This is followed by maceration in contact with the skins for about 25 days. Malolactic fermentation and ageing take place in steel for about 10 months, giving the wine greater complexity and harmony. Finally, the wine matures for 6 months in bottle before being put on the market. Brilliant ruby colour with garnet reflections, the nose opens with a broad and complex bouquet, characterised by intense floral notes of violet and rose, which blend with hints of small red fruits such as strawberry, cherry and raspberry. These are then joined by pleasant balsamic, mineral and spicy hints. In the mouth it is warm, enveloping and structured, with well-integrated tannins and a pleasant freshness that gives balance and persistence. The finish is long, with pleasant mineral notes that leave a lasting impression. It is perfect with savoury red meats, its structure and complexity also make it ideal as a meditation wine.

On the northern slopes of Etna, between 700 and 800 metres above sea level, lies Cottanera, a winery that well represents the passion and respect for the volcanic earth. A unique, difficult and at the same time generous territory that gives the grapes unmistakable characteristics. Cottanera is a family story, where the passion for wine is handed down from generation to generation. In the company's vineyards, both indigenous vines, such as Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Carricante, and international ones, such as Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Mondeuse. Each grape variety finds its ideal habitat in this terroir, expressing its characteristics to the full and producing wines of great complexity and elegance.
