Lots of glazed cherries, Indian spices, watermelon, rhubarb and persimmon. Fine and delicate, this medium-bodied wine has striking elegance and complexity with tons of herbal undertones and nuances of earl-grey and English-breakfast tea. Not the most powerful wine, but certainly makes up for it with its deeply cast flavors. Drink now.
Enticing scents of wild berry, violet and Mediterranean scrub mingle with minty notes. It's elegant and linear, offering juicy Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, star anise and orange zest alongside lithe, polished tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. KERIN O’KEEFE
A pure Nerello Mascalese could not be missing among the wines offered by Carranco on Etna. After all, it is the King among the native vines of the volcano. The Pinot Noir of Sicily which, as in the case of this red wine, when it comes from vines over 50 years old, can reach peaks of absolute excellence. Vinified in cement tanks according to the most ancient tradition, this Etna DOC is aged in large oak barrels. The result is a wine capable of expressing the volcanic personality of its land of origin. A ruby red colour that is not too intense and typical, the nose has a fine bouquet, with clear hints of red fruits and flowers. In the mouth it is structured and balanced, with fruity hints of strawberry and black cherry. Spicier notes also stand out, of black pepper and rhubarb. The tannin, finally, is tasty and silky, with a nice persistence. With time it acquires more animal scents and tertiary scents emerge. Served at the right temperature, it is a wine capable of giving great satisfaction on our table.
Great things happen when men and mountains meet. This phrase by William Blake, published on the website of the Carranco winery, sums up well what is not a simple winery. It is he dream of two great men of wine that met in a moment of their lives and gave life to something unique and unrepeatable. Carranco, in fact, was born in 2018, from the collaboration between Borgogno and Tornatore. The oldest winery in Barolo and one of the very few native producers. A marriage of history, authenticity and experience. We are on the north side of Etna, considered the most suitable territory for the growth and production of the great wines of the volcano. The vineyards are located about 500 metres above sea level, within the 'Contrada that gives its name to the company. Eight hectares of vineyards, cultivated with the native vines of Etna, and therefore mainly with Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Carricante. The vineyards are old, on average 50/60 years old, still cultivated with traditional systems and conducted with modern methods of sustainable agriculture. Gobelet vines of extraordinary beauty, planted on small terraces on the slopes. The result is fruit of extraordinary concentration from which wines with unmistakable personality and character are obtained. After all, from a great land and from two great characters we could not expect anything different.
