The Etna Rosso Cavanera Rovo delle Coturnie shows the graceful and elegant style that we are seeing among these new releases from Firriato. The wine's power and heft are downplayed to make room instead for light cassis, wild rose, violets and bitter almond aromas. The mouthfeel is silky and compact, offering some smoke, tar and crushed volcanic stone on the close.
Aromas of ripe strawberries and dried orange peel follow through to a full body, round tannins and a juicy, chewy finish. Some walnut, too. Lovely richness and balance to this. Drink or hold.
Exotic incense, oak, mint and Mediterranean brush aromas lift out of the glass. The smooth, concentrated palate offers licorice, dried cherry and orange zest alongside taut, polished tannins and fresh acidity. Drink through 2026. KERIN O’KEEFE
It is enough to leave the coast of Catania and start climbing towards the top of the volcano to clearly perceive all the contrasts that make Sicily a magical and enchanting place. On one side the sea, blue and deep. On the other, an untamed vegetation that in summer fights with an increasingly extreme drought. Above, the white top of the mountain, often snow-capped, always surrounded by a thick blanket of clouds. All around, dark-colored ground. A land that you can tell has something special about it. Something that then, if you are lucky enough to taste a local wine, is also found in the glass. As in the case of this son of Etna, the Cavanera Rovo delle Coturnie, Etna DOC from Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. It's hard to imagine a more volcanic blend than this. In the glass it has a beautiful, transparent and bright ruby red color. On the nose sophisticated notes of small red fruits, nutmeg and black pepper. A wine that smells of its smug volcanicity in the iron and mineral nuances. In the mouth it is full-bodied and pleasantly tannic. Of remarkable persistence, one sip is enough to make us feel like modern explorers discovering the mouth of the volcano.
Among the most representative wineries of Sicily there is undoubtedly Firriato. Modern in concept, style and marketing, Firriato is the brainchild of a visionary entrepreneur from Trapani, Salvatore Di Gaetano, who has always been supported by his charming wife Vinzia, who for years has also represented the public image of the winery in the world. We are in the 80s and Sicilian wine is about to live its golden age, its renaissance, as someone wrote in the past. Today, after almost 40 years, the Firriato winery is a solid reality, based in Paceco, between Trapani and Erice, and with vineyards scattered in different areas of Sicily. The hectares of vines owned are in fact about 320, divided into seven different estates, including one on the slopes of Etna and one on the island of Favignana. If in the countryside the most rigorous respect for nature reigns, in the cellar technology helps oenologists to make the most of each variety processed, whether native or international. The result is wines that are awarded by critics around the world and sought after by wine lovers year after year.
