Tenuta di Fessina. Contrada Rovittello Via Nazionale SS 120, 22 Castiglione di Sicilia (CT)
A unique and special wine. We are talking about Erse, Etna DOC Rosso, proposed here by Tenuta di Fessina. A wine that encapsulates the essence of the Etnean territory. The main grape variety used is Nerello Mascalese, accompanied by Nerello Cappuccio. And so far there are no particularities compared to many other reds from the area. The difference is that in this case the grapes of the two indigenous red varieties par excellence are joined by a small percentage of Carricante and Minnella, both white grapes. A mix traditionally used in the past, where white varieties were added to red ones to soften the overly full-bodied wines a little. In this case, the grapes come from east-facing vineyards that give the wine a pleasant freshness. It is, in fact, a 'morning wine', produced from grapes that do not suffer the excessive heat of long summer afternoons. In the glass it is an intense ruby red. The nose has hints of wild fruit, spices, pepper, rose and ink. In the mouth, however, it is full-bodied and silky at the same time, with soft and austere tannins. Elegant and with a strong territorial character, it is ideal with meats, mature cheeses and Sicilian dishes.
Let's start by saying that Tenuta di Fessina is today considered by many experts as a reference point for the Etna area and, more generally, for the new Sicilian viticulture. A modern, quality-oriented company capable of offering, vintage after vintage, wines with a unique and distinctive character. We are, as will be clear by now, at the foot of Mount Etna, in Sicily. A land rich in contrasts and with great oenological potential. Its founder, Silvia Maestrelli, a pioneer among the producers who have given new impetus to oenology on Etna, says of herself that she was 'motivated by love for this land and a passion for wine'. Fortunately, one might say. In 2007, after lengthy negotiations with the former owners of the land, Tenuta di Fessina was officially established, a project that combines the sensitivity of a 'feminine' oenological vision with the technical ability of consultants and collaborators to create a high-level production reality. The production, as is normal, focuses mainly on the interesting indigenous varieties of the volcano, such as Nerello Mascalese and Carricante, with some interesting additions of international varieties such as Chardonnay and Syrah. Its secret? Organic farming and maniacal attention to the different stages of vinification and ageing of the wines.
