    "Ferzo" Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC 2023
  • Citra's Ferzo line celebrates Abruzzo, a region with a long winegrowing tradition. Here, the climate, the soils and - above all - the passion of the winegrowers contribute to wines with great personality. Just like this Ferzo, Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC, which beyond any doubt represents the most authentic expression of the Montepulciano grape variety. It comes from the hills of Ortona, in the province of Chieti, from a privileged territory where the meeting of sea and mountains creates precisely the ideal conditions for growing Montepulciano grapes. An indigenous grape variety of excellence in Abruzzo, Montepulciano is known and appreciated for its versatility and great aromatic intensity. This vine produces both structured reds and fresh, fruity rosés, such as this Cerasuolo. In the winery, after a soft pressing, the must remains in contact with the skins for a short period at low temperature (cryo-maceration), until the characteristic cherry colour is extracted, but without loading the wine with tannins. The clear must is then transferred to steel tanks where it ferments at a controlled temperature. In the glass, Ferzo Cerasuolo has a brilliant cherry red colour. On the nose, intense fruity notes of cherry, or ‘cerase’ as they say in those parts, and pomegranate stand out. A fresh and inviting perfume that anticipates the pleasantness of the sip. In the mouth, the wine is fresh and well balanced, with a lively acidity that enhances drinkability. The cherry notes also return on the palate, accompanied by a pleasant almond finish that adds complexity. Thanks to its freshness and versatility, this Cerasuolo is perfect with fish soups and seafood dishes, such as mullet and shellfish, as well as with tomato-based first courses. Also perfect with white meats, semi-matured cheeses and, hear hear, even with pizza.

Codice Citra represents the largest community of winegrower members in Abruzzo, bringing together 3,000 families united by their respect for nature. The headquarters, the imposing winery, is located in Ortona, in the province of Chieti. A few kilometres separate it from the sea. A few more from the foothills of the Apennines. In between, there is another sea. It is the one represented by the many vineyards that neatly subdivide the surrounding countryside. Suffice it to say that there are around 6,000 hectares of vineyards belonging to Citra and that the winery is equipped with two bottling lines capable of churning out 20,000 bottles of wine per hour. But these numbers should not frighten. Although large, and Codice Citra really is, this winery has never lost the taste (and pleasure) of producing good wines. Deeply attached to their territory of origin, they have been a point of reference for the region for 45 years.
