A beautiful but strongly perfumed red with dried violets, blackberries, forest floor and dried herbs. Juicy and structured on the full-bodied palate, and yet there’s wonderful transparency to the layered blue fruit and spice undertones. The tannins are polished and chewy. Drink from 2021.

  • Wine Enthusiast 89

This opens with aromas of mature dark-skinned berry, underbrush and cooking spice. The dense, solid palate offers raisin, mocha and star anise alongside close-grained tannins. Drink through 2023. KERIN O’KEEFE

    Valpolicella DOC Classico Superiore "Verjago"
  • Verjago, Valpolicella Doc Classico Superiore, is not the common drinkable and immediate Valpolicella. It is rather the fruit of a careful selection of the best grapes coming from the most suitable vineyards of the Valley. Hilly vineyards where the indigenous varieties of the region, Corvina and Rondinella in clear majority, mature and enrich themselves with sugars and aromas. After manual harvesting, the bunches of grapes are left to dry for over a month in modern fruit lofts. This is followed by careful vinification and a long ageing of over a year in large oak barrels and another 3 months in the bottle. The result is a superior Valpolicella, which pairs perfectly with all types of meat and aged cheeses. Intense ruby red colour, the nose is dominated by notes of spices and red fruit, with clear hints of cherry. In the mouth it is velvety, fine and elegant.

A historical organisation of Valpolicella. A social winery, that of Valpolicella Negrar, founded in August 1933 by "six local gentlemen" who joined together in a company to defend the territory from speculative investments. The aim, now as then, is to get directly to the consumer with products bottled in full respect of the local winemaking tradition. A tradition that the members of the winery cherish and safeguard with religious respect. Few people remember it, but it is precisely to the Negrar winery that we owe the origin of Amarone. It was 1936. Today the winery can count on about 600 hectares of vineyards, distributed in different areas of Valpolicella Classica (but not only) and cultivated by about 230 members. It boasts a wide production of wines awarded by international critics, a project to safeguard the environment and above all a line of high quality wines, the Domìni Veneti, which are exported all over the world. So much water has passed under the bridge since that distant August of 1933. And how much wine has been produced since then (and certainly enjoyed with satisfaction).
