Bischöfliche Weingüter Trier. Yes, the name is unpronounceable, at least for us poor Italians, but the quality of its wines is simply outstanding. We are talking about one of the most renowned wineries in the Moselle area, in the heart of Germany, where the Riesling grape is the most widely cultivated and where the grapes ripen only thanks to a unique mix of perfect exposure, dark soils capable of accumulating heat and proximity to the river, the Moselle. Here, on steep vineyards that are difficult to work, Bischöfliche Weingüter Trier selectively harvests only the best Riesling grapes, which are then vinified in temperature-controlled steel tanks. At the end of this process, before bottling, the wine is left to mature in contact with its fine lees for a few months, acquiring complexity and greater elegance. The Riesling Kabinett Scharzhofberger, in particular, is a fresh, vertical white wine that reveals an intriguing bouquet with notes of flint and sweet spices. Then hints of lime, pear and even passion fruit. A very pleasant wine, with good acidity and extremely gratifying fruit. Opulent and rounded, this Riesling has an excellent capacity for ageing. Good today, it certainly does not fear being 'forgotten' in the cellar for a few years. Perfect as an aperitif, with fish starters, shellfish and crustaceans. Good with white meats and, for lovers of extreme combinations, also with fruit-based desserts.
Bischöfliche Weingüter Trier is located in the Moselle region of Germany. Its origins go back a long way. They date back as far as 1772, when Archbishop Wenceslaus of Saxony created the Bischöfliche Priesterseminar, which to this day is still an important religious training centre of the Trier Diocese. The 'modern' history of the wine cellar dates back to 1966, thanks to the merger of several entities, Bischöfliches Konvikt, Bischöfliches Priestersemi and Hohe Domkirche. Today, Bischöfliche Weingüter Trier owns extraordinarily valuable plots of land and offers a range of high-quality wines, made according to the oldest local traditions. Steep, non-mechanisable vineyards and a modern processing cellar, equipped with stainless steel vats for vinification and around a thousand barrels for ageing, are its distinguishing features.
