If you ever wondered about the kerner grape (an import from Germany to Alto Adige), the nose of this wine is about as typical as it gets. Green yet ripe through and through is the best description I can find. However, this wine also shows how wines of this grape can tend towards the heavy side in this climate. There’s just enough acidity to keep this on track.
If you have never had the opportunity to taste a Kerner, this is the time to do it. The one offered here by Abbazia di Novacella is, in fact, simply 'scholastic'. In the sense that it is perfectly representative of the type. But what is Kerner? A semi-aromatic white grape variety, Kerner is traditionally grown in cold regions. In particular in Germany and Austria. In Italy, as you would expect, it is best found at the foot of the Alps, particularly in Alto Adige, where it is also used to produce DOC wines. Like this Alto Adige Valle Isarco. In the glass it has a beautiful golden yellow colour with evident greenish reflections. On the nose it is easy to pick out its distinct aromaticity, with notes of ripe peach and apricot. Then orange peel, ginger and elderflower. In the mouth, however, it is described as 'juicy' and powerful, with delicate sweet and fruity notes on the finish. A wine destined to become a favourite with many wine lovers. Perfect as an aperitif, perhaps accompanied by a nice board of speck and cheese, thanks to its natural freshness, it requires pairings with a slight fatty component. Excellent with gnocchi with cheese, it is the wine to open if you are working with duck in the kitchen.
It is impossible to think of South Tyrol as a wine-producing area without looking at the hills where the vineyards of the historic Abbey of Novacella are located. This is one of the oldest still active wineries in the world. The first documentary evidence of the Abbey dates back to 1100. In 1177, to be precise, Pope Alexander III granted the monastery possession of the nearby vineyards and over the centuries, through donations, foundations, purchases and exchanges, the Abbey accumulated considerable vineyard holdings. Some of these are still in the hands of the present-day company. From the bottom of the valley, i.e. from about 600 metres above sea level, the vineyards of Novacella reach an altitude of almost 900 metres. Even today, many farmers still bring their best grapes to the abbey's wine cellar so that they can be carefully processed into the excellent wines that are appreciated all over the world.
