Imbottigliato all'origine da Cantina Valle Isarco - Chiusa
The setting of the Eisack Valley is the birthplace of Sabiona Kerner, a white wine that expresses the character of its terroir in a crystal-clear manner. It is offered by the Cantina Valle Isarco, whose vineyards extend over stony alluvial soils rich in diorite. This soil composition, combined with the cool, sunny climate typical of the area, gives Kerner a particular minerality and freshness. The vineyards are located at an altitude of 630 to 680 metres, which contributes to slow ripening and the preservation of a beautiful natural acidity. Kerner is an aromatic grape variety, obtained by crossing Trollinger and Riesling. A relatively young vine, thanks to its resistance to cold and its ability to adapt to difficult soils, it has spread rapidly in many wine-growing regions. In South Tyrol, in particular, this grape variety finds an ideal habitat, resulting in wines that are naturally characterised by intense aromas of yellow-fleshed fruit, white flowers and spicy notes. The vinification of Sabiona Kerner follows tradition. The grapes are harvested by hand and immediately undergo a gentle crushing. Then the must ferments at a controlled temperature in acacia wood barrels, giving the wine a light spicy note. Maturation on fine lees in tonneaux follows. Brilliant pale yellow, the nose is striking for its intense and aromatic bouquet, with notes of apricot, peach, white flowers and a slight hint of spice. In the mouth, it is dry, fresh and savoury, with a medium body and a long, lingering finish. This Kerner is a young wine that is already ready to drink. But it can also be cellared for a few years, developing more developed and complex notes. It goes well with fish dishes, shellfish, white meats, fresh cheeses and grilled vegetables.
Although Valle Isarco boasts a very old winemaking tradition, the beautiful social wine cellar was only founded in 1961, by 24 families. Cantina Valle Isarco is the youngest wine co-operative in South Tyrol and today, after more than 60 years of existence, can count on the work of no less than 135 members who cultivate a total of 150 hectares of vineyards, spread over 11 municipalities from Bolzano to the south of Bressanone. The Eisack Valley offers one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in South Tyrol, characterised by majestic mountains, ancient farms, castles, monasteries and villages, magnificent chestnut groves and, above all, terraced vineyards with their tidy stone walls. Here, the winegrowers do ‘heroic’ work, accustomed as they are to caring for predominantly steep terrain, with plants growing up to 950 metres high. Vineyards that are often tiny in size but just as often characterised by unique soil and climate conditions. The special microclimate of this area, characterised by warm summer days and cold nights during the harvest period, ensures the production of fresh, fruity and mineral-rich wines. Overall, the Cantina Valle Isarco's annual production is around 950,000 bottles, divided between no less than 14 varieties, of which 10 white and 4 red. The total number of labels is 28, including some very interesting special editions. The winery's ‘white’ vocation is best expressed by the good local grape varieties, such as Kerner, Sylvaner, Grüner Veltliner, Gewürztraminer and, of course, Müller Thurgau.
