Weingut C.H.BERRES Markus Berres - Würzgartenstr. 41 D-54539 Ürzig-Mosel, Germany
Riesling Mosel, i.e. from Mosel, the German region famous worldwide for the quality of its Rieslings. Spatlese Urziger Würzgarten, are respectively the German classification and trade name of the wine. Fortunately, if you buy it here, you will not find yourself in the need to order it from a sommelier. It is difficult, if not impossible, to pronounce this long name correctly. But if 'naming it' is complicated, tasting it will simply be a pleasure. It is produced by the C.H. Berres winery in the municipality of Ürzig, in the Moselle Valley. Soils of red colour, due to the high presence of iron, and a good percentage of clay give the wine elegance and finesse. The good exposures, on the other hand, provided by the steep slopes that descend from the hilltops towards the Moselle River, ensure that the grapes ripen well. After manual and selective harvesting, the grapes are brought to the cellar to be started on the alcoholic fermentation phase, using only indigenous yeasts. This is followed by a period of ageing in the cellar, again in steel tanks. Straw yellow with bright, golden hues, the nose is clearly reminiscent of passion fruit and tropical fruit in general. Then notes of flint and fresh citrus fruits. In the mouth, it is pleasantly elegant and persistent. Fresh but well balanced, it goes well with fish, shellfish and shellfish dishes.
C.H. Berres is located in Ürzig in the heart of the Mosel, a German region famous throughout the world for its extraordinary Rieslings. The origins go way back, the Berres family has in fact been cultivating vines and producing great wines in the most ancient traditions for no less than five centuries. Today, Markus Berres, representing the 21st generation, manages the family estate. Just over three hectares, divided into numerous plots, located in some of the most valuable terroirs in the area, with old vines still cultivated - sometimes free-standing - on the steep slopes directly facing the river. The small size favours meticulous care of each individual parcel and a still artisanal approach.
