Abrigo Giovanni - Via Santa Croce 9 12055 Diano D'alba (CN)
Ravera, Barolo DOCG signed by Abrigo Giovanni, is a wine of great longevity, freshness and body. This is due to the unique characteristics of the microclimate and soil, typical of the additional geographical indication (MGA) Ravera, in the commune of Novello. 100% Nebbiolo, 'Ça va sans dire', the vineyards are rooted in soil of ancient Tortonian origin, composed of Marne di Sant'Agata fossils Laminate, with plants ranging in age from 20 to 35 years. Harvested by hand, in boxes, processing begins in mid-October, when the grapes have reached perfect ripeness. Processing is separate for grapes harvested from different parts of the vineyard. It begins with destemming and alcoholic fermentation at a controlled temperature in steel tanks, with submerged cap maceration varying in time depending on the quality of the vintage. At the end of this process, the wine matures for approximately 38 months, of which at least 18 months in barrels of varying capacity of French oak. Then, after blending in stainless steel tanks and bottling, there is a further resting phase in the cellar before final release, which generally takes place in January of the fourth year following the harvest. In the glass, it has a delicate ruby-garnet red colour. On the nose, the aroma is typical and very pleasant. Fruity, intense and ethereal, very persistent, with a balsamic finish. In the mouth it reveals a good body, dry flavour, important tannins, full and very promising. The finish is long and persistent. Such a wine undoubtedly requires a high level of pairing. Excellent, for example, with boiled, braised or roasted meats. For those who love strong flavours, it is also perfect with game and, possibly, with well-aged cheeses.
An authentic family-run business. This is the Giovanni Abrigo company, named after its founder, which has been cultivating land and enhancing the products of the Langhe since 1968. Back in the day, Giovanni and Maria ran the typical Langa farm, raising Piemontese beef cattle and small farmyard animals. Added to these were the cultivation of cereal fields, hazelnut groves, orchards and, of course, vineyards for the production of Dolcetto wine. Development arrived in the mid-1980s, when son Giorgio, having completed his agronomy studies, began to take over the cultivation of hazelnut groves and vineyards. The latter were planted on the company's best exposed and most suitable land. Then, with the arrival of the new millennium, it is their children who join the company. This gives new life and stimulus, and leads, in 2019, to the completion of the construction of the new ageing cellar, which unites and completes the premises built by the different generations.
