    "Susco" Susumaniello IGP Salento 2020
  • Susumaniello, a native Apulian grape variety, is known for its 'shy' character. Hence its dialect name of 'Susco'. Once undervalued due to its low yield, it is now revalued for its unique qualitative qualities. The Susumaniello clusters give wines of intense ruby red colour, with floral and fruity aromas, spicy with delicate balsamic notes. Just like this little gem of the Salento, offered by Cantine di San Marzano. The grapes are harvested by hand and vinified with care. Fermentation takes place in steel at a controlled temperature to preserve the freshness and varietal aromas. This is followed by ageing in French and American oak barriques for 6 months, giving the wine complexity, structure and softness. Intense ruby red in colour, the nose reveals a complex bouquet with floral aromas, ripe red fruits, sweet spices and balsamic hints. In the mouth it is structured, with a lively acidity that gives freshness and an elegant, well-integrated tannin texture. The finish is persistent, with a spicy aftertaste that invites another sip. A versatile wine, it pairs perfectly with savoury earthy dishes. First courses with meat sauces, barbecued main courses and mature cheeses.

Imagine immersing yourself in the heart of Salento, amidst expanses of alberello vines kissed by the sun and caressed by the breeze of the Mediterranean Sea. This is where you will find Cantine San Marzano, a fine winery that has contributed to the renaissance of Apulian wine. Founded in 1962 by 19 winemakers with a common dream, that of joining forces to face the challenges of an evolving market, San Marzano today has over 1200 members and 1500 hectares of vineyards. A cooperative soul founded on two essential values: respect and modernity. Respect for tradition, which translates into the deep bond with the land and the ancient know-how of the winegrowers. And modernity, which translates into an innovative vision of wine, capable of interpreting contemporary tastes without forgetting the authenticity of the land. An approach that can be found in the modern winery, where the grapes are vinified with care and attention, bringing out the best varietal characteristics. San Marzano's commitment also extends to sustainability. In fact, the cooperative has adopted an integrated production system that reduces environmental impact and protects biodiversity.
