Château Rieussec, Rieussec 33210 Fargues, Francia
We are in the heart of the Bordeaux region, more precisely in the Sauternes area, universally recognised for its iconic botrytised wines. And it is from this unique terroir that R de Rieussec is born, an unexpected and fascinating Bordeaux Blanc. The Bordeaux area boasts an extraordinary diversity of soils and microclimates. In this specific case, the grapes destined for R de Rieussec come from predominantly sandy-clay and gravelly soils. This composition is fundamental because the sand guarantees good drainage and favours the early ripening of the grapes, while the clay brings a certain freshness and structure. Finally, the presence of gravel, typical of many areas in the Bordeaux region, reflects the heat of the sun, contributing to optimal ripening and giving the wine a pleasant minerality. It is interesting to note that this terroir, famous for the autumn mists that favour the appearance of Botrytis cinerea, enjoys an ideal climate in spring and summer for the cultivation of fresh and aromatic white grapes. A curious anecdote is that often the same vines that in autumn produce golden and very sweet grapes, in summer offer vibrant bunches rich in acidity. R de Rieussec is made from a skilful blend of Sauvignon Blanc (56%) and Sémillon (44%). The combination of these two grape varieties is a classic in white Bordeaux, where the freshness of the Sauvignon is balanced by the structure and richness of the Sémillon. The production method is designed to preserve the freshness and primary aromas of the grapes as much as possible. The grapes are hand-picked into small crates, a process that demonstrates the care taken in selecting the best bunches. Refrigerating the grapes before pressing is an essential step to prevent oxidation and preserve the delicate aromas. The must is extracted by gentle pressing to ensure a clean, aromatic product. Fermentation takes place partly in stainless steel tanks at low temperatures to enhance the freshness of the Sauvignon, and partly in oak barriques (both new and used) for the Sémillon, to give greater complexity and a light woody note. Ageing on the lees in barriques for six months, with bâtonnage, contributes to the silkiness and greater complexity of the wine. The final blending of the parts aged in steel and in wood precedes bottling. Pure Elegance. R de Rieussec 2023 appears in the glass with remarkable purity. The nose reveals a complex and inviting bouquet, with notes of fresh citrus fruits, delicate floral scents and aromas of white-fleshed fruits. The barrel ageing adds a touch of finesse without overpowering the freshness of the fruit. On the palate, the wine stands out for its impeccable balance between a pleasant richness and a vibrant aromatic luminosity. The structure is silky, the wine is easy to drink and the finish is elegant and persistent, with a pleasant salty minerality that invites you to take another sip. Thanks to its freshness, balanced acidity and aromatic finesse, R de Rieussec is an extremely versatile wine at the table. It goes well with light fish or vegetable-based starters, raw or steamed seafood. Excellent with delicate risottos, grilled or baked white meats and fresh cheeses.
Château Rieussec is a historic wine estate in Sauternes, classified as a Premier Cru Classé in 1855. Located in the municipality of Fargues, near Bordeaux, its history dates back to the 13th century. In 1984 it was acquired by Domaine Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), which helped to further improve its quality. Today the winery has over 90 hectares of vineyards, mainly dedicated to Sémillon, as well as Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. The soil is alluvial, rich in gravel and limestone. The area is characterised by autumnal mists that favour the development of the so-called Botrytis cinerea, the noble rot essential for the production of Sauternes wines. The Château Rieussec estate, managed by Domaine Barons de Rothschild, maintains high quality standards, taking advantage of a unique terroir and meticulous attention to every phase of production. Its classification and history make it one of the most emblematic and respected names in the world of sweet Bordeaux wines.
