Forget the axiom Wine-Piedmont-Red. Because here, on the rolling hills of the Langhe, in addition to Nebbiolo and Barbera, a truly interesting white grape variety has also been successfully cultivated for years. We are talking about Arneis, well represented here by one of the ‘creations’ from the winery of Pier Paolo Grasso. A white wine that embodies the freshness and vivacity of this native Piedmont grape variety. The vines are located at an altitude of about 250 metres above sea level. The roots sink into medium-textured calcareous-clay soil. This soil composition, combined with a temperate climate, creates ideal conditions for growing Arneis. Langhe Arneis DOC, this designation of controlled origin guarantees high quality standards and enhances the unique characteristics of the grape variety and the territory. Arneis, whose name in Piedmontese means ‘little rascal’ due to its capricious nature in the vineyard, is a grape that requires special care but which, if well cultivated, produces wines of great elegance and complexity. Pier Paolo is well aware of this as he ‘pampers’ it in the countryside throughout the year, waiting for the most favourable moment for the harvest. In the cellar the grapes undergo white wine vinification, with fermentation at a controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks, preserving the fresh and fruity aromas typical of the grape. To the eye, Moroso has a brilliant straw yellow colour. On the nose, aromas of apricot and camomile, accompanied by hints of aromatic herbs such as thyme and sage, and a slight mineral note. In the mouth it is velvety, savoury and very fresh, with a persistent floral finish. Its balanced structure and lively acidity make it particularly pleasant and versatile. Thanks to its freshness and versatility, this Arneis is ideal as an aperitif, but also goes well with shellfish dishes, both raw and grilled, and with large baked fish. Excellent with poultry and game, its balanced acidity makes it an ideal companion for flavourful dishes.
The Pier Paolo Grasso winery is located in Neive, in the province of Cuneo, in the heart of the Langhe, one of the most prestigious areas in Italy for the production of high quality wines. Pier Paolo, founder and current owner, was born into a family with a strong winemaking tradition and from an early age he devoted himself to agriculture and in particular to the cultivation of vines. After gaining solid experience in the sector, he founded his company in 2000. The philosophy is to produce high quality wines that are an expression of the territory and a passion for viticulture. The company is run by Pier Paolo and his wife Sara. Together they form a great team and take care of every detail of production, from the vineyard to the bottle. The range of wines produced includes Barbaresco DOCG La Fenice, Barbaresco DOCG Ca' Grossa and Barbaresco Riserva DOCG Piccola Emma. All produced with quality grapes grown with respect for the environment and tradition.
