The red you don't expect. This is, in short, the comment many enthusiasts make when they have the chance to taste this interesting Syrah 'Made in Valle d'Aosta'. In this case, the grapes used are grown on the south-facing slopes in the municipalities of Nus, Quart, Saint-Denis, Chambave and Châtillon, between 450 and 550 metres above sea level. Harvesting takes place in the first fortnight in October and after a long maceration in contact with the skins and ageing 'sur lies' for at least 12 months, of which at least 50% in small wood, a wine with a unique character is obtained. With powerful and elegant notes blended in a fascinating balance of ripe red fruits and spices. Ruby red with garnet highlights, it is warm, full and with great volume in the mouth. A wine that enjoys a perfect balance between all its parts, in particular between the softness of the fruit and the 'hardness' of its tannins that are prominent but not unpleasant. An extremely persistent red, it can be served as an aperitif with simple cured meats. At table it goes perfectly with game and roasts.
Not many people are familiar with the quality of Valdostan wines. And that is not strange. So few are produced that only true experts often have the opportunity to taste them. Yet the productions, although small, are often of excellent quality. After all, the area of Chambave, a central village in Valle d'Aosta, located 18 km east of Aosta and 7 km west of Saint-Vincent, is an area of ancient wine production. Even the first written traces referring to wines produced here, at the foot of Europe's highest peaks, date back to the early Middle Ages. Moreover, the soil is perfect for growing quality grapes, with sandy, pebbly, shallow soils rich in mineral salts. This is where La Crotta di Vegneron is located, a young winery consisting of almost 100 'vigneron' who, all together, cultivate just over 30 hectares of vineyards. Their speciality are the wines produced from the particular indigenous grape varieties of the region, without of course forgetting the more traditional ones. Mountain wines, sincere and good.
