CHARACTERISTICS
  • TypeVino bianco fermo
  • Location France
  • Grapes 80% semillion 20% sauvignon
  • Sensations In addition to the richness of sugar (from 18 to 20 degrees), it produces numerous aromatic substances and confers to the must, first, and to the wine, later, scents and flavours that recall raisins and ripe fruits (apricots and peaches, for example) or more delicate flowers (acacia and honeysuckle). The aromas do not fade with time. On the contrary, Sauternes age better than reds and over the years acquire the softness, character and full, persuasive body that characterize them. A unique product in perfect balance between alcohol and unfermented sugar.
  • Vinification Sauternes grapes are harvested only when they have reached the stage of over-ripeness. With the help of the autumn fogs and the humidity brought by the Ciron, each grape is affected by the ìbotrytis cinerea. This microscopic fungus metabolizes the peel and deprives it of part of the water contained in the pulp, thus producing important changes in its composition: reduction in volume, concentration of natural sugars, decrease in acidity. The berries affected by the fungus take on a brownish-violet plum colour and soon wrinkle and ripple: this will contribute to making the must more concentrated in taste and aroma. The harvest in the sauternes is therefore particularly long (from four to eight weeks) and the care and delicacy required are the price of quality. Grapes, must and wines must never come into contact with metal. Fermentation of the grapes is very slow: it often lasts more than a month. At least 16 months in oak barriques.

The 2013 Bastor-Lamontagne has a fresh, vibrant bouquet with scents of pineapple, citrus peel and apple, perhaps a little light and more malic than expected, yet fresh and focused. The palate is expressive and harmonious. There is impressive tension here, the acidity cutting straight though the lightly honeyed fruit, and it finishes in some style, with a long spicy aftertaste. This Sauternes has good potential.

  • Wine Spectator 89

A very bright, floral-styled version, with lots of honeysuckle, green plum and green almond aromas and flavors allied to a medium-weight, fairly creamy mouthfeel and backed by a lemon sorbet note on the friendly finish. An estate to watch, as the owners of Château Smith-Haut-Lafitte are managing this since 2014. Drink now through 2020. 1,500 cases made. — JM

    Sauternes Chateau Bastor Lamontagne
  • If the region of Bordeaux is often associated with the power and elegance of its red wines made of Cabernet and Merlot, it should not be forgotten that just next to Médoc, there is an area where excellent white wines made of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon are also produced. These two grape varieties, sensitive to theso-called noble rot, or Botrytis Cinerea, give rise to some of the most interesting dessert wines in the world, labelled as Sauternes. A fine example is this Château Bastor-Lamontagne, made from grapes harvested in vineyards with an average age of 45 years and endowed with great elegance, finesse and acidity. After a strictly manual harvest, the wines are left to mature in barriques for a period varying between 13 and 18 months.

Great attention to quality and style, without forgetting a tangible contribution to the well-being of the environment. This is why since 2013 the wines offered by Château Bastor-Lamontagne are labelled as organic. No small effort, if we consider that the region of Bordeaux is known for a climate that is not exactly dry, with rainfall distributed over 12 months, which obliges producers, or a good part of them, to treat with continuity to avoid the onset of diseases. Château Bastor-Lamontagne can count on about thirty different plots, most of which gravitate to the town of Pregnac. In its vineyards, the leading role is reserved for Sèmillon alongside parcels of Sauvignon Blanc.
