      Etna Bianco "Scalunera" DOC 2023
    • Scalunera is the name of a line of wines produced by the Piccini family on the Torre Mora estate. We are in the Etna area, in Contrada Alboretto Chiuse del Signore. Here they produce wines made from native Etna vines, such as this white wine, the result of a pure processing of Carricante grapes, a vine that best expresses the volcanic minerality and freshness of the area. The grapes, in particular, come from vineyards bred using the alberello and spurred cordon systems, and are located at an altitude of 650-700 metres above sea level. Harvested by hand at the end of September, the grapes are immediately cooled with carbonic ice to prevent oxidation. Then, after a soft pressing, the must is fermented at a controlled temperature for about 15 days. This is followed by an ageing phase on its lees for about 3 months. In the glass it has a beautiful straw-yellow colour with greenish reflections. The nose is fresh, with notes of white fruit and aromatic herbs. In the mouth it is rich, with lively acidity and a salinity reminiscent of the sea. The finish is long, persistent and savoury, with a mineral essence that enhances the character of the terroir. Scalunera Etna Bianco DOC is a versatile and gastronomic wine. It pairs well with seafood, grilled fish, vegetables and delicate first courses.

They rightly call themselves 'The Italian wine family'. After all, what is now a huge enterprise that revolves around the work of 7 wineries, in Tuscany but not only, and that is able to put millions of bottles of wine on the market every year, originates from a single small plot of land in Poggibonsi. It was purchased in 1882 by Angiolo Piccini who founded his own company with his wife, Maria Teresa Totti. From that small plot, 7 hectares in all, the first Chianti straw flasks were produced. The rest is history, work and commitment. Today, Mario Piccini, the fourth generation of the family, runs the company. With him are his sisters Martina and Elisa and his children Ginevra, Benedetta and Michelangelo, all personally involved in the company's activities. Five of the family's seven estates are cultivated according to organic farming principles.
