La Spinona Az. Agr, Via Secondine 30, 12050 Barbaresco (CN) Italia
It comes from the commune of Novello, one of the historic sites for the production of Barolo. It is proposed by La Spinona, a fine family business that has been living this territory for five generations. We are talking about Barolo DOCG Sorì Gepin, a red wine for ageing that stands out for its complexity and rich structure. The grapes used for this wine come from a single south-facing vineyard on the top of the hill, with ideal conditions of light and ventilation. The clay-limestone soil, typical of Novello, gives the Nebbiolo the ability to develop structured tannins and unmistakable mineral notes. All in perfect balance. Harvesting takes place between the end of October and the beginning of November, when Nebbiolo reaches full maturity. Harvesting is done by hand, carefully selecting the best bunches of grapes, which are then transported in small baskets to prevent them from spoiling, initiating spontaneous and unwanted fermentation. Vinification begins with cold maceration for one day, followed by fermentation for 15-20 days. Automatic punching-down and pumping-over ensure a perfect extraction of the noble substances from the skins, while temperature-controlled malolactic fermentation blunts the natural acidity of the Nebbiolo, giving more roundness to the wine. After vinification, Sorì Gepin matures for about 18 months in large 25-hectolitre French Allier and Slavonian oak barrels. The barrels, which are between 5 and 10 years old, add depth to the wine, without overpowering the elegance of the Nebbiolo. The wine then continues its development in the bottle for a further 12 months, until it reaches a perfect balance of freshness, power and finesse. In the glass, Sorì Gepin has a ruby red colour that tends towards garnet with time. On the nose, it impresses with its complex and rich bouquet, with aromas of ripe red fruits, floral notes and tertiary nuances of spices, leather and tobacco, the result of long ageing in wood. In the mouth, it is austere and deep, with a robust presence of well-integrated tannins and excellent persistence. Well balanced, it reveals a full body and a pleasant feeling of harmony. A wine for long ageing, capable of evolving for more than 10-15 years in the bottle, it is ideal with important dishes such as braised meats, roasts, game and mature cheeses. It is also perfect as a meditation wine, to be sipped for hours, appreciating every nuance.
La Spinona is a winery with a long family history. We are located in the municipality of Barbaresco, recognised by UNESCO as a world heritage site. Here the winery covers 24 hectares of vineyards spread over four farmsteads: La Spinona, La Ghiga, L'Albina and La Bergera. Of these, 20 hectares are dedicated to the cultivation of Nebbiolo for the production of Barbaresco, then Barbera, Dolcetto and Chardonnay, the only white grape grown on the estate. The remaining 4 hectares are in the commune of Novello. Here is a wonderfully south-facing vineyard, where the best Nebbiolo for Barolo is cultivated. The history of La Spinona began in 1920, when Giovanni Berutti bought his first vineyard in the Faset area of Barbaresco. The official foundation of the winery, however, dates back to 1967, when Pietro Berutti helped to market his wines, also abroad. The family tradition was later carried on by his son Gualtiero, who combined his experience as a veterinarian with a profound knowledge of the land and viticulture. Since then, five generations of the family have carried on the winemaking business with passion and dedication. Today, the company is run by Pietropaolo, who has managed to combine tradition with innovation. A graduate in oenology, Pietropaolo personally oversees every stage of winemaking, ensuring that each bottle of wine reflects the authenticity of the terroir and the craftsmanship that distinguishes La Spinona. Thanks also to the sustainable use of natural resources, such as the use of fertiliser from the company's Fassona Piemontese cattle farm, the beautiful winery demonstrates an ongoing commitment to quality and respect for the environment.
