Malvoisie, as few people know, is the name given to the Pinot Grigio grape variety when it is cultivated in the Nus wine-growing district. We are in the heart of Valle d'Aosta, in the presence of some of the highest vineyards in Italy. Here, Pinot Grigio is able to express all its character and allows producers to try their hand. This is precisely why Nus Malvoisie is considered the perfect expression of its terroir. In this case, the vineyards of origin are located in the communes of Nus, Fenis and Quart, between 450 and 680 metres above sea level. Soft and careful vinification, the wine matures in steel vats for about 6 months, in contact with its fine lees, kept in suspension by frequent 'bâtonnages'. Bright straw yellow, the nose reveals an intense and persistent bouquet. Pleasantly fruity, citrus notes are discernible with hints of Golden apple and aromatic herbs. In the mouth it is full and dry, with good structure. The finish reserves sensations of pleasant savouriness and persistence. At table it is excellent with hors d'oeuvres, soups, vegetable soups. But also spicy white meats and risottos.
Not many people are familiar with the quality of Valdostan wines. And that is not strange. So few are produced that only true experts often have the opportunity to taste them. Yet the productions, although small, are often of excellent quality. After all, the area of Chambave, a central village in Valle d'Aosta, located 18 km east of Aosta and 7 km west of Saint-Vincent, is an area of ancient wine production. Even the first written traces referring to wines produced here, at the foot of Europe's highest peaks, date back to the early Middle Ages. Moreover, the soil is perfect for growing quality grapes, with sandy, pebbly, shallow soils rich in mineral salts. This is where La Crotta di Vegneron is located, a young winery consisting of almost 100 'vigneron' who, all together, cultivate just over 30 hectares of vineyards. Their speciality are the wines produced from the particular indigenous grape varieties of the region, without of course forgetting the more traditional ones. Mountain wines, sincere and good.
