LA CROTTA DI VEGNERON Coop. Agr.Piazza Roncas, 2 Chambave (AO) 11023
It comes from the heart of the Aosta Valley, this interesting white wine. A DOC wine produced from Muscat Blanc grapes, or Muscat Petit Grains, in purity. Bunches from the garden vineyards managed by the small Crotta di Vegneron cooperative with excellent exposure and located in the municipalities of Chambave and Saint-Denis. Here the soils are of morainic origin and steeply sloping, making every operation in the vineyard rather tiring. After the harvest, the bunches of grapes are quickly delivered to the cellar to begin the transformation phase immediately, preventing the initial fruit from degenerating and losing quality. It starts with a pre-fermentation maceration phase of 24-36 hours, followed by fermentation in temperature-controlled steel tanks, activated by selected indigenous yeasts. At the end of the transformation, the wine matures between steel and large wood, in contact with its fine lees kept in suspension with frequent 'bâtonnages'. Straw yellow of medium intensity with golden reflections, this Muscat from Valle d'Aosta reveals an intense and persistent aromatic nose. Hints of sage, thyme, citrus notes such as pink grapefruit. In the mouth, it confirms itself as a well-structured and well-balanced white. The citrus sensations return, accompanied by hints of acacia flowers. An elegant and persistent white, it goes well with medium mature fatty cheeses. Also excellent with lightly smoked fish.
Not many people are familiar with the quality of Valdostan wines. And that is not strange. So few are produced that only true experts often have the opportunity to taste them. Yet the productions, although small, are often of excellent quality. After all, the area of Chambave, a central village in Valle d'Aosta, located 18 km east of Aosta and 7 km west of Saint-Vincent, is an area of ancient wine production. Even the first written traces referring to wines produced here, at the foot of Europe's highest peaks, date back to the early Middle Ages. Moreover, the soil is perfect for growing quality grapes, with sandy, pebbly, shallow soils rich in mineral salts. This is where La Crotta di Vegneron is located, a young winery consisting of almost 100 'vigneron' who, all together, cultivate just over 30 hectares of vineyards. Their speciality are the wines produced from the particular indigenous grape varieties of the region, without of course forgetting the more traditional ones. Mountain wines, sincere and good.
