AZIENDA VINICOLA FEDERICI VIA SANTA APOLLARIA VECCHIA 30 ZAGAROLO (RM)
Roma DOC... This is enough to attract our attention. If then, as in this case, it is an excellent wine, things become even more interesting. Collezione Oro di Federici, comes from grapes harvested in the municipality of Zagarolo, in the province of Rome, at about 350 metres above sea level. The climate here is typically Mediterranean, with mild winters and moderate rainfall, and warm, breezy summers. The soils are predominantly tufaceous, perfect for planting two grape varieties typical of central Italy, Montepulciano and Cesanese, to which a small percentage of Merlot is added. Vinified at a controlled temperature, maceration and alcoholic fermentation last about 20 days, with frequent punching-down and daily pumping-over. At the end of the transformation, the wine matures in wood for about 6 months, in new 500-litre oak tonneaux, with weekly batonnage. Upon pouring, one discovers a wine characterised by a beautiful bright ruby red colour. The nose is broad, with notes of ripe red fruit that blend well with hints of liquorice and spices. In the mouth, however, it is robust and full-bodied, with well-presented and integrated tannins. Its peculiar acidity, then, well balanced by the fruit and alcohol, makes it particularly long and pleasant. To appreciate it at its best, there is nothing better than a good mix of grilled meats or medium to mature cheeses.
'We put our family name on the bottles, and we want everything to be done in our image'. This could be the slogan of the Federici winery in Zagarolo, in the province of Rome. Founded in 1960 by the grandfather of the current owners, Antonio Federici. It was a company that was the child of Italy's boom, of the dolce vita and that subtle carefreeness that we probably dream of today. 2001 marked the turning point. It is the moment when it is decided that, in order to produce with the right quality, one must also begin to cultivate one's own grapes and manage one's own vineyards. This is done by starting with typical local grape varieties such as Trebbiano, Malvasia del Lazio, Malvasia di Candia and Grechetto, with Montepulciano and Sangiovese, to which international varieties such as Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon are added. The result is achieved. Federici's wines represent the ideal combination of tradition and that touch of novelty necessary to enliven it. Today, the vineyards, part estate and part from historic vintners linked to the Federici company by long-term agreements, are worked according to the guidelines laid down by Franco Bernabei, who coordinates the team of agronomists and oenologists, supervising the work. This is how the wines are created that have won awards and recognition from specialised Italian and international wine guides.
