CITRA VINI, c.da Cucullo 66026 Ortona (CH)
The Ferzo line represents a tribute to Abruzzo by one of its most illustrious institutions. The Citra winery, in fact, has carefully chosen the region's most vocated wine-growing territories, selecting the best vineyards everywhere to make the most of the many good typical grape varieties, including Pecorino, with its unique and intense aromatic profile. Thanks to its simultaneous proximity to the Adriatic Sea and the Apennines, Abruzzo enjoys ideal geographical characteristics for wine growing. The Chieti hills, in particular, where the vineyards are located, enjoy a perfect microclimate for growing Pecorino. Here, sea breezes mitigate summer temperatures, while cool mountain currents keep the climate dry and favourable for a balanced ripening of the grapes. Despite being an ancient variety, Pecorino is now experiencing a new prestige thanks to its good adaptability and the growing attention of local winegrowers, who appreciate its freshness and structure. Once in the winery, the grapes are first subjected to a soft pressing. The must obtained undergoes cryo-maceration to extract intense aromas without altering the wine's freshness. This is followed by temperature-controlled fermentation in steel tanks, which allows the clear must to fully develop the characteristic aromas of Pecorino, preserving its floral and fruity notes. In the glass, Ferzo has a straw-yellow colour with greenish reflections. On the nose, the bouquet is complex, with hints of white flowers, delicate notes of acacia and herbaceous hints of sage. This is followed by aromas of tropical fruit, such as pineapple, which lend an exotic and inviting touch. In the mouth, it stands out for its structure, supported by a pleasant minerality and a long persistence that enhance the wine's freshness. This Pecorino is perfect with seafood cuisine, especially shellfish and raw fish. However, it also goes well with white meats and vegetable dishes.
Codice Citra represents the largest community of winegrower members in Abruzzo, bringing together 3,000 families united by their respect for nature. The headquarters, the imposing winery, is located in Ortona, in the province of Chieti. A few kilometres separate it from the sea. A few more from the foothills of the Apennines. In between, there is another sea. It is the one represented by the many vineyards that neatly subdivide the surrounding countryside. Suffice it to say that there are around 6,000 hectares of vineyards belonging to Citra and that the winery is equipped with two bottling lines capable of churning out 20,000 bottles of wine per hour. But these numbers should not frighten. Although large, and Codice Citra really is, this winery has never lost the taste (and pleasure) of producing good wines. Deeply linked to their territory of origin, they have been a point of reference for the region for 45 years.
