Paolo e Noemia d’Amico S.r.l. Località Palombaro – Vaiano – 01024 Castiglione in Teverina (VT)
Paolo and Noemia d'Amico's company focuses its production on the processing of international grape varieties, of French origin. But there is one exception. And it is represented by this Agylla. Lazio IGP, this surprising white wine is produced from the native grape variety par excellence of central Italy, Grechetto. In this case, the grapes come from vineyards located in upper Lazio, on the border with Umbria. We are at an altitude of about 450 metres above sea level, in an absolutely unique natural environment. The uniqueness of this wine, however, is not limited to the choice of an indigenous rather than an international grape variety, but also to the special processing technique involving the use of amphorae and steel tanks. The result is a wine characterised by a beautiful golden yellow colour. The nose surprises with a complex combination of aromas, with hints of white flowers, acacia honey, hazelnuts and almonds. In the mouth, however, it proves to be a complex but well-balanced and fresh wine with a broad mineral finish. It should be tried with seafood, but also with fish-based first and second courses or delicate white meat dishes.
The history of this small boutique winery is strongly linked to that of its two founders. Paolo, a descendant of a family of ship-owners for three generations, has always been passionate about wine, ever since he strolled through the old cellars of the family home as a child. Noemia, on the other hand, was born in Rio de Janeiro, of Portuguese origin, from Porto. Her grandparents, upon arriving in Brazil, brought with them the historical tradition of wine. In 1985, after years of working in other activities, the two decided to start the project of their new winery, which was immediately based on elegance and exclusivity. In the countryside, the grapes are selected and harvested by hand. While the production phase is followed, step by step, by oenologist and agronomist Guillaume Gelly. The result is an award-winning portfolio of eight labels, organically produced, mainly from French vines, on volcanic soils in the Calanchi Valley in Umbria. Small curiosity. While waiting to reach the shelves of wine shops and restaurants, the wines are stored in cellars created by Noemia d'Amico and architect Luca Brasini. Carved out of tufa rocks, the cellar has magnificent arches that create an enchanting pathway and where classical music is played. A magical place to pamper excellent wines.
